Greedfall and Steelrising developer Spiders look set to close their doors, according to a recent report

It’s looking like a difficult time for the game developer Spiders. A recent report from French publication Origami suggests they may be closing down, just weeks after releasing their game, Greedfall: The Dying World. This news comes after layoffs last year and the failure of their publisher, Nacon, to find a buyer for Spiders following the studio’s financial difficulties. (Please note: this report relied on machine translation.)

Nacon is currently starting the legal process to potentially close down Spiders, though sources at Origami say this is just a preliminary step for now. Origami also notes that most companies going through similar restructuring end up being fully liquidated. Nacon was reportedly trying to find a buyer by mid-April, but that deadline has passed without a deal.

Spiders is a game development studio established 19 years ago, known for its role-playing games. They created titles like Of Orcs and Men, The Technomancer, Steelrising, and the Greedfall series. Despite recently releasing Greedfall: The Dying World in March and providing updates as recently as yesterday, the game’s performance wasn’t enough to prevent the studio from facing financial difficulties and entering insolvency proceedings.

According to Kotaku, the French video game union Syndicat des Travailleureuses du Jeu Vidéo has accused Nacon and its leaders of mismanaging the studio. In a statement released in March, the union claimed that a lack of respect for game development and poor leadership actively harmed studios that were previously successful and put promising projects at risk. They also stated that worsening work conditions and the creation of new studios – seemingly designed to undermine existing ones – were ways to cut staff and ultimately made the situation worse.

Solidarity to those affected by the studio’s closure.
