How to Cure Hunger in Subnautica 2

Staying fed could be a challenge in Subnautica 2, particularly if you struggle to locate the ingredients needed to make good food. It’s not just about catching fish – there are plenty of those! – but about finding the right resources.

In Subnautica 2, your character can’t eat just anything. Human stomachs have limits, and that’s a key challenge in the game. To overcome this, you’ll need to improve your character’s DNA, unlocking an alien ability that removes something called ‘Digestive Incompatibility’. This allows you to eat a wider variety of foods.

How to Cure Digestive Incompatibility in Subnautica 2

Do you remember that purple, flower-like thing you saw at the beginning of Subnautica 2? You’ll need to find that again to cure Digestive Incompatibility.

These flowers are known as Gene Donors. When you touch one, it introduces a foreign trait into your system, granting you a new passive ability. Here’s how you can find them:

  • Start from the Lifepod and look at the angle between North and Northeast. Target somewhere around 20 degrees.
  • Now, move in that direction until you are 155 meters away from the Lifepod.
  • If you look beneath the water now, you should spot the giant Gene Donor.
  • Interact with itto get the Digestion buff, which lets youeat fish without feeling sick again.

You can get this benefit from the Gene Donor without needing any special equipment or meeting any requirements. It’s really important to get the Digestion upgrade quickly, before your character starts suffering from being undernourished.

Be aware that some dangerous sea creatures live near the Gene Donor. It’s best to be in good health before starting this trip, or pack some medicine just in case.

Best Food to Cure Hunger in Subnautica 2

The table below lists some food items in the early stages of Subnautica 2 and their effectiveness:

Meal Food Water Health
Sugar of Saturn +10
Halfmoon Jerky +40
Threemoon Temaki +60 +15
Cherimoya Chutney +40
Oily Salad +20
Cooked Halfmoon +25
Cooked Harvestmoon +30
Cooked Bluemoon +25 +5
Cooked Geordie +30
Nutrient Block +40
Coral Mash +65

As you play, you’ll find various ways to get food. At the beginning of the game, you can easily catch small fish near your Lifepod, cook them, and eat them to satisfy your hunger.

To create truly high-quality food, you’ll need more than just the main ingredient – salt is essential for maximizing its benefits.

Okay, so I figured out a good spot for resources. If I head southeast from the Lifepod, there are these deep caves where I can farm salt. Seriously, salt is a game-changer – it makes my food way more effective, like over 50% better! Definitely worth the trip.

In Subnautica 2, you won’t need to cook every food item. While you can get a little energy from simply gathering edible plants, those raw foods aren’t nearly as beneficial as the more effective meals you can create using a Fabricator.

Eating well doesn’t just give you nutrients – it also helps keep you hydrated. While making water bottles uses resources, certain foods can contribute to your daily fluid intake.

You can also restore health in a similar way. For example, eating something like Threemoon Temaki will give you a little bit of health back and help with strong hunger pangs.

Coral Mash is a very nutritious food, but it takes some effort to make. First, you’ll need to gather large coral pieces found near the southern well at the ocean’s edge. It’s definitely worth the trouble, though!
