Since Vergil became a playable character in the Devil May Cry series (first appearing in Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening), fans have debated which of Sparda’s sons is stronger. Dante fights with a more unpredictable style and has a wider range of weapons, but Vergil is calm, focused, and incredibly fast. Plus, he possesses unique demonic abilities that Dante doesn’t have.
After years of debate among fans, the question of whether Vergil is stronger than Dante might finally be answered. Season 2 of the Devil May Cry series on Netflix offers new insights into how and when Vergil gained his incredible power.
Why is Vergil more Powerful Than Dante in Devil May Cry?
In the second season of Devil May Cry, Vergil and Dante finally reunite after a long separation, and they immediately address their years apart. Both twins inherited incredible power from their father, Sparda, a legendary demon warrior, but Vergil seems to be the stronger fighter. The series explores the reasons behind this difference in their abilities.
Vergil became the true heir of Sparda through a brutal upbringing. He endured years of torture, followed by rigorous training under Mundus, who gave him the Yamato Katana and taught him to harness his demonic abilities.
Dante wandered off course and fell into a difficult life, becoming involved with gangs and living as a street urchin. While not officially part of the established story, he eventually became a bounty hunter.
Vergil’s strength stemmed from his challenging life – constantly facing trials, defeating Mundus’s foes, enduring the toxic atmosphere of Makai, and mastering his supernatural abilities. This unique path is what ultimately set him apart and made him far more powerful than Dante.
While some fans might not like how often Dante from the Netflix series Devil May Cry gets thrown around – even if it’s meant to show growth – it’s important to remember that Dante has basically lived on junk food and strawberry smoothies for most of his life.
Their different childhoods likely explain why Vergil has the edge over Dante, ultimately winning their fight in Episode 8. However, the story isn’t finished, and the season 2 finale hints at more to come for Dante—once he’s had time to recover from a painful experience.
Comparing Vergil and Dante from Devil May Cry 3
Devil May Cry 3 is seriously special! It’s where Dante and Vergil finally meet, and it’s amazing to see the start of their rivalry. It’s actually the first game when you look at the timeline, even though it’s the third one released. Honestly, Vergil just seems to have more pure demonic strength, but Dante? He’s a combat master! He can switch between so many weapons – nunchucks, swords, pistols, even rocket launchers! – and that versatility is what really sets him apart from his brother. He’s just so much more adaptable in a fight.
In Devil May Cry 3, Dante and Vergil are roughly equal in power, but Vergil has much greater control over his demonic abilities. The game lets players experience both characters, and each one fights in a distinctly different way.
Dante is a relentless fighter who strings together attacks rapidly. He uses both ranged weapons, like his signature Ebony & Ivory pistols, and a variety of powerful melee weapons to quickly defeat large groups of enemies and inflict massive damage. His arsenal includes the Rebellion Longsword, the dual blades Agni & Rudra (wind and fire), and Nevan, a scythe/guitar that unleashes electric attacks, among others he acquires by defeating demons as he ascends the Temen-Ni-Gru tower.
Vergil excels at controlling space and time, and uses his incredible speed and precise attacks with his katana, the Yamato, and his Beowulf gauntlets and boots. He also relies on Summoned Swords for long-range attacks. When Vergil activates his Devil Trigger, transforming into his demonic form, his power increases dramatically, allowing him to unleash a flurry of attacks and quickly defeat enemies.
In Devil May Cry 3, Dante and Vergil are generally considered equally matched. However, many fans believe Vergil is stronger because of his time-control abilities and the impressive Yamato sword, which they see as cooler than Dante’s weapons. This perception is misleading, though, as the two brothers have very different fighting styles. The same could be said for the series as a whole, but lately, Dante has taken a backseat to Vergil. We’ll have to wait for season 3 to see if that changes.
