Jack Dorsey, the previous CEO of Twitter and a strong supporter of Bitcoin, is reminding people of the early days of cryptocurrency.

Jack Dorsey hinted on X that he might bring back the original Bitcoin faucet, a famous and historically significant part of Bitcoin’s early days.

The details of Block’s new initiative remain scant until the launch.

The history of the faucet 

Back in June 2010, Bitcoin was a little-known project, mostly limited to a small group of cryptography experts and those interested in early online privacy technologies.

Gavin Andresen, a key early developer of Bitcoin, helped people explore the new digital currency by creating the original “Bitcoin Faucet.” This website simply gave away free Bitcoin so anyone could try out the software.

The numbers are, of course, mind-boggling by today’s standards.

People could easily get 5 Bitcoins just by completing a simple CAPTCHA, which was used to confirm they weren’t bots. Back then, 5 Bitcoins didn’t have much value at all. Andresen paid for the whole system himself, initially using 1,100 Bitcoins he had personally mined.

If you had kept the 5 free coins you once earned by completing a single CAPTCHA, they would now be worth a fortune – hundreds of thousands of dollars!

The first Bitcoin faucet ran for about two years, distributing a large amount of BTC – tens of thousands in total. It was closed down once the price of Bitcoin started to increase.

While it’s highly unlikely Jack Dorsey’s new project will give away large amounts of Bitcoin, bringing back this idea is a great way to honor Bitcoin’s early days and community spirit.
