James Gunn Reveals Lanterns Release Date on HBO Max

James Gunn is just starting to build his new DC Universe. While the franchise has been heavily focused on films like the successful Superman (2025) and the upcoming Supergirl: Girl of Tomorrow (2026), shows like Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, and the planned Lanterns (2026) prove the DCU will explore a wide range of stories. This means different styles and perspectives within a world full of superheroes.

I was a little worried when the Lanterns trailer disappeared from YouTube, but it all makes sense now! They’ve just added the release date to the trailer, and it’s fantastic news for us Green Lantern fans. We can mark August 16, 2026, in our calendars – that’s when we finally get to see Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart team up to defend Earth from all kinds of dangers, both here and out in space!

The Lanterns’ Trailer Shows Another Side of the New DCU

I’m really excited about the upcoming Lanterns show, though it seems totally different from the bright, hopeful vibe of the new Superman film. Honestly, the trailer felt more like something for a crime drama than a superhero story! It looks like it’s set in Texas, and we see Hal Jordan trying to train Jon Stewart, who’s clearly eager to get out there and use the ring. What really struck me was how little green there was in the trailer – every flash of green felt really important and stood out. It’s a cool change of pace, and I’m intrigued to see where they take it.

Although the trailer doesn’t showcase the Lantern Corps’ vast reach across the galaxy, they’ll still be central to the story and the broader DC Universe. The Lanterns offer exciting possibilities for exploring new stories and threats throughout the galaxy, as each Green Lantern typically watches over entire solar systems, not just individual planets. Some fans believe the murder mystery in the upcoming Lanterns series could be a setup for Blackest Night, a major event from the DC Comics universe.

The trailer effectively introduces the tension between Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Hal Jordan is portrayed as a more traditional, independent Green Lantern who doesn’t often collaborate with others, including Guy Gardner (who previously appeared in the 2025 film Superman). John Stewart, on the other hand, is a younger, more eager hero who’s focused on actively protecting people. He feels Hal is outdated and believes he could be more effective. Despite their initial disagreements, the trailer suggests their shared adventure will ultimately unite them against a new danger to Earth.

Lanterns premieres on HBO Max on August 16, 2026.
