The news that Konami is ending support for Master Duel in Russia and Belarus has led to a lot of discussion about the reasons behind the decision. Many believe it’s connected to the war in Ukraine, as Russia has previously blocked some Western games and several developers have stopped selling there. Others suggest the game simply isn’t very popular in those countries, and the Yu-Gi-Oh series hasn’t gained a strong following there.

The popular game Master Duel will soon no longer be available in Russia and Belarus, continuing a trend of game developers withdrawing from these regions due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Following the start of the war in 2022, major companies like Sony, Ubisoft, and Take-Two stopped sales and implemented other restrictions in Russia. Games such as Pokemon GO and World of Tanks were also removed from access for players there, as a response to the Russian government’s actions. More recently, the European Union proposed a law in early 2025 that would prohibit the sale of video game controllers in Russia.
