Matt Reeves Seemingly Confirms a Major DC Villain’s Role in The Batman II

Despite the disappointment of the delayed release of The Batman II, fans have something to look forward to: a well-loved, but often overlooked, villain may be taking center stage as the main enemy in the next film. While details are still scarce, development is moving forward consistently, and we might see the first trailers and promotional materials soon. The 2022 reboot, created by Matt Reeves, faced setbacks due to difficulties with the script, but the project now seems to be progressing smoothly.

As a huge fan of The Batman (2022) – seriously, it’s up there with the best DC films ever made – I’ve been eagerly awaiting news about the sequel. Even though it’s been five years since the first one, people are still talking about it! Robert Pattinson absolutely nailed both Bruce Wayne and Batman, Paul Dano’s Riddler was unforgettable, and the whole movie just felt like Gotham City. So, it’s no surprise that even the smallest bits of news get fans incredibly excited, and the latest sneak peek has everyone buzzing!

The Batman II Will Be Set In Winter

Matt Reeves shared on X (formerly Twitter) that test screenings for the new Batman movie have started, using the hashtag #SnowTires. He responded to fans, confirming the film will feature a battle in the snow. Most excitingly, his posts strongly suggest that Mr. Freeze could be the main villain. Reeves previously expressed interest in introducing the character (Victor Fries) in a sequel, and with the movie now confirmed to take place in winter, it seems likely he’ll be appearing. He’s a character who was transformed by an accident that altered his body, and specializes in extreme cold.

He shared more on the app than ever before, which really excited fans who hadn’t heard anything new in months. The script was finished in June 2025, and James Gunn, Colin Farrell, and Andy Serkis all loved it. While filming has just begun – evidenced by recent camera tests – everything is in place to avoid further delays. Sebastian Stan also talked about his character, Harvey Dent, and how grand in scope this movie is.

There Are More Villains To Choose From

Although Mr. Freeze is a strong contender to be the film’s villain, director Matt Reeves previously stated the new antagonist would be someone audiences haven’t seen in a Batman movie before. This casts doubt on Mr. Freeze’s chances. Still, other compelling villains like Hugo Strange remain possibilities.

The Court of Owls or Hush would both make fantastic villains in the next Batman movie. There’s a real chance it could be even better than the first film, and that potential will only increase as we learn more about the story.
