Many consider ‘The Pitt’ to be one of the best shows on television. It’s definitely the most realistic medical drama ever made, and even Stephen King is a fan. The show takes place entirely within a single, incredibly busy day in the emergency room of Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, offering non-stop action for both the doctors and viewers. While a third season is planned, it won’t air until 2027, making now a great time to explore some medical simulation games.
Hospital-based games often focus on humor, but some stand out by aiming for realistic experiences. These games are especially powerful because you actively participate in them. If you’re curious about the challenges faced by doctors like Dr. Robby, these titles are worth exploring.
Don’t take the title too seriously – it’s meant as a joke! I also really enjoy The Pitt. These games provide a unique and gritty kind of realism.
Project Hospital
Experience Hectic Hospital Life From Every Level
While Two Point Hospital is the most well-known hospital management game, its humorous style doesn’t always feel authentic, even though it plays very well. Project Hospital aims for a more realistic experience – it’s the closest we’ll likely get to a truly authentic hospital simulator. Just like the challenges faced by Dr. Robby and the team in The Pitt, Project Hospital (released in 2018) captures the constant pressure and multitasking required in a hospital environment, though it presents it in a different way.
Unlike typical hospital games focused solely on treatment or management, Project Hospital lets you build, run, and practice medicine. You begin by designing the hospital layout, and even minor errors – like a distant emergency room – can have serious consequences for patients. As an administrator, you’ll handle all the business aspects: hiring staff, managing finances and insurance, and preventing employee burnout – it’s a lot like the challenges faced in The Pitt!
Alternatively, you can directly become a doctor and manage everything from the start, interacting with patients and making critical decisions. Project Hospital is based on realistic medical principles and doesn’t offer much guidance, even showing the more mundane aspects of the profession – something often glossed over in dramatic medical shows like The Pitt.
Full Code Medical Simulation
A “Game” That Is Used By Medical Students As A Learning Tool
- Developer: Full Code Medical Inc
- Available on iOS and Android devices
- Official Site
Full Code Medical Simulation isn’t a game in the traditional sense, though it can be found on app stores. It’s actually a learning tool designed to make medical simulations more widely available. Developed by a team of doctors, the simulation focuses on realistic one-on-one interactions between doctors and patients, requiring players to perform thorough examinations. Full Code highlights the critical importance of detail – overlooking something like allergies or recent travel history could lead to an incorrect diagnosis or even a harmful prescription.
While Full Code Medical Simulation doesn’t aim to perfectly recreate the stressful environment of a busy hospital emergency room – something The Pitt does very well – it focuses on making players feel the impact of their decisions. The game highlights both successes and errors with a final score for each case, creating a sense of accountability and realism.

Bio Inc. Redemption
You Are Life, And You Are Death
If you’ve already experienced the unsettling hospital environments in The Pitt, you might appreciate that Bio Inc. Redemption shifts the focus away from that aspect while still offering a believable medical simulation. What’s really interesting is that this strategy game lets you choose to play as either the doctors trying to save a patient (“Life”) or the disease itself (“Death”). Both roles are based on actual medical cases, diseases, and how they develop in the body.
Instead of letting you play as a doctor in a hospital, Bio Inc. Redemption puts you inside the human body, challenging you to solve a complex medical puzzle. The game features hundreds of diseases, and you have to keep track of seven different body systems simultaneously. Everything is interconnected – for example, kidney failure can eventually cause heart and breathing problems. No other game so effectively portrays the frightening experience of a patient’s health rapidly declining.
Emergency Room: Real Life Rescue
- Developer: Legacy Software
- Available on Nintendo DS
Many people consider The Pitt to be a follow-up to the popular show ER, but there’s also a long-running Emergency Room series that began in 1995. This series inspired 8 video games over 15 years, and almost all of them were made for Macintosh and PC computers. The only exception was Real Life Rescues in 2009, which was released for the Nintendo DS.
Despite the Nintendo DS’s technical limitations, Real Life Rescues is a surprisingly engaging game, and the touch screen works really well for simulating medical procedures. The game puts you in the role of a paramedic, allowing for a detailed and realistic look at the job’s duties, equipment, and difficulties. Compared to other games of its type, Emergency Room, Real Life Rescues is one of the most enjoyable to play.
