The creators of the popular new indie game, Mixtape, have responded to player worries about the game potentially being removed from sale when its music licenses run out. Mixtape features licensed songs from artists like The Smashing Pumpkins and Portishead, and historically, games using licensed music have often been delisted when those licenses expire. However, the developers of Mixtape have confirmed that won’t happen with their game.
In a recent interview with Kotaku, the developer of Mixtape, Johnny Galvatron, explained that the game won’t be removed from sale due to music licensing issues. The team successfully renegotiated licenses with artists willing to allow their songs to remain in the game. Pink Floyd served as a key test case – when they refused, the developers knew to focus on bands that would agree to keep their music available, even though the original licenses had expired.
Galvatron described a running joke where Stacy would show something on screen and declare it to be ‘The Smashing Pumpkins, and it’s awesome.’ According to Galvatron, if that clip were sent to Billy Corgan, the band’s frontman, he’d essentially agree and say the same thing – that it was great and perfectly acceptable.
The bands were happy to have their music featured in Mixtape, and Stacy’s positive comments about them in the game helped make that happen. Because of this, fans can rest easy knowing the game won’t be removed from stores due to licensing issues.
May was a great month for video game releases, with Mixtape being a standout title. And there’s more to come! Forza Horizon 6 launches tomorrow, and later this month we’ll see LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight and 007 First Light. Don’t miss out on all the exciting games coming this month!
Mixtape is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
