New Open-World Zelda Game Leaks: New Gameplay Gimmick, Puzzles, and More

There’s a lot of talk about future Legend of Zelda games, including rumors of a remake of Ocarina of Time and a spin-off featuring Ganondorf. However, surprisingly, these discussions have overshadowed what might be an even bigger leak: details about the next major 3D Legend of Zelda game. While a remake and spin-off would be great, people are especially eager to learn about the next main game following Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

If you haven’t heard, a well-known source called Nate the Hate claims a complete remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 this holiday season, and will be the console’s major release. Another source, Nash Weedle, suggests a new 2D Zelda game starring Ganondorf is also in development, potentially using a similar style and engine as Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. It’s still unconfirmed if either of these rumors are true, but there’s a third, less-publicized leak adding to the speculation.

The Next Open-World Zelda Game May Include Dimension Hopping Gameplay

A well-known and usually accurate source of leaks, Shpeshal Nick, recently shared some information about the next big Legend of Zelda game on the XboxEra Podcast (around 1 minute and 22 seconds into Episode 294). While his claims haven’t been officially confirmed, he has a good history of providing correct information. According to Nick, the new Zelda game will be another open-world adventure similar to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, taking place in the same world and using an upgraded version of the same game engine.

While Breath of the Wild explored Hyrule’s surface and Tears of the Kingdom added areas above and below it, the new Zelda game is rumored to take players across different “dimensions.” It’s not yet known if there will be one major dimension or multiple, but the gameplay sounds similar to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, where players quickly travel between worlds. For instance, players will be able to move between dimensions through rifts, allowing them to solve puzzles that span different realms. One example is luring a bull in one dimension to break a target in another, opening a door for the player. Another is using water from a different dimension to lift objects and solve puzzles in the player’s current world.

So, Nick isn’t sure when this game will actually come out, but he thinks it’s still a long way off – years, probably. Jeff Grubb, who usually knows his stuff, agrees, saying late 2025 seems like a realistic point in development, which would put the release sometime between 2027 and 2029. It all lines up nicely too, because if that Ocarina of Time remake drops in 2026 and the Ganondorf spin-off comes out in 2027, this new game could fit right into that schedule.

Until Nintendo officially announces the next Zelda game, fans will need to be patient. However, the rumors sound plausible and like a logical step forward for the open-world Zelda style. Plus, the series has often explored different dimensions or dimension-based gameplay, so it would fit well with where Zelda is heading now.
