In a recent interview, Shigeru Miyamoto talked about The Super Mario Bros. Movie and clarified that Nintendo wasn’t responsible for all the nods to older Nintendo games included in the film.
The first Super Mario Bros. Movie was packed with references to Nintendo games, especially those from the older, 8-bit days. You could spot little details referencing titles like Duck Hunt, Punch-Out, and Star Fox throughout the film, alongside nods to Mario’s overall history. The recent Super Mario Galaxy Movie did the same thing, and perhaps even more so—to the point where all the references started to distract from the story itself.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, recently shared some insights about making The Super Mario Bros. Movie in an interview with Famitsu. He revealed a key detail about the film’s development that sheds light on some of its story choices.

Shigeru Miyamoto explained that the many references to Nintendo games in both The Super Mario Bros. Movie and a potential Super Mario Galaxy movie are thanks to the team at Illumination. He revealed that Illumination’s staff actually remembered more details about Mario lore than Nintendo themselves, leading to the abundance of nods and Easter eggs.
As a long-time Mario fan, it’s totally understandable why we’re always excited to see references to the older games. A lot of us grew up playing those classics, and we’ve seen firsthand how much fun and creativity they’ve inspired over the years – it’s just awesome to see that legacy continue!
The films received so many awards thanks to the dedication of the Illumination team, who actually remembered more details about the project than Nintendo themselves, according to Miyamoto.
Nintendo created these games, so they have a unique, insider’s view on how they were made and the effect they’ve had.

It’s great that Illumination added those subtle references to its other games, as they’re a real highlight, particularly for fans who’ve enjoyed those franchises for years. While it would be good to see them used a bit more sparingly in future Mario movies, they sometimes overshadowed the main story in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
