As a huge Pokémon fan, it was crazy seeing everything leak before Pokémon Scarlet and Violet came out! A beta version popped up online, and we found out about the scrapped evolutions for Magikarp and Gyarados way early. Honestly, the leaks for Gen 9 were the biggest I’ve ever seen in a Pokémon game – the entire Pokédex with pictures was out there! Even the big leaks for the upcoming Pokémon Winds and Waves (from the TeraLeak) don’t compare. Everything important for Scarlet and Violet was revealed before launch, including a playable version of the game!
With the upcoming release of Pokemon Winds and Waves in late 2027, which promises to be a fresh start for the series, many fans are curious about previously discarded ideas. Recently leaked information revealed that alternate, regional versions of Magikarp and Gyarados were considered for the ninth generation of Pokemon games, but were ultimately replaced by Toedscool and Toedscruel. These scrapped designs have remained a mystery until now, as a newly discovered beta version of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet has finally shed some light on them.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Cut Magikarp and Gyarados Forms Leak Online
A Twitter user named IcyBoi33 posted screenshots from the beta version of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet that appear to show early designs for Magikarp and Gyarados, which were ultimately removed from the final game. Interestingly, both Pokemon are listed as Dragon-type in these early versions. This is notable because many fans have long hoped for a Dragon-type Gyarados, perhaps as a new evolution or regional variant, and these designs seemed to be heading in that direction.

It’s also worth pointing out that the new Pokemon Scarlet and Violet game didn’t add any completely new Dragon-type Pokemon, which is interesting considering the leaked designs for evolved Magikarp and Gyarados. These alternate forms would have been ground-based Pokemon, possibly with legs. Even more notably, these leaked designs seem to break the rules established for the convergent species we did see in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Wiglett and Wugtrio are both Water-type Pokémon, which is interesting considering their inspiration, Diglett and Dugtrio, were Ground-type. Water is strong against Ground, suggesting this wasn’t a random choice. This pattern continues with Toedscool and Toedscruel, which are Ground/Grass-type. Looking at the original Pokémon, Tentacool and Tentacruel were Water/Poison – types weak to Grass and Electric, or Ground and Psychic. This suggests the Pokémon’s types were intentionally chosen to be opposite their inspirations, rather than simply based on their appearance.

If Magikarp and Gyarados had been Dragon-type Pokémon, things could have played out differently. Dragon-types are strong against Water, but Gyarados also has a Flying type, which wouldn’t offer the same resistance. It’s unknown if these Pokémon will appear in the new region of Pokemon Winds and Waves, but many fans would likely be excited to see them. It would be fascinating if new versions of Magikarp and Gyarados evolved differently and didn’t follow the usual type combinations, or even if they were simply pure Dragon-type Pokémon.
