The next generation of Pokémon, titled Pokémon Winds and Waves, is expected to launch around 2027. According to reliable sources familiar with the game’s development, we likely won’t see official announcements until the new year. While that’s disappointing, the recent ‘Teraleak 2’ has revealed a lot of details – some of which were hinted at or confirmed when Game Freak first announced Pokémon Winds and Waves. Plus, ongoing rumors and leaks continue to generate excitement.
Fans loved Pokemon Legends: Arceus, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A was also well-received, so many are wondering if the upcoming Pokemon Winds and Waves will feature more fast-paced battles. While it’s still early to say for sure, it looks like the combat will be similar to previous games, but both Legends titles could still inspire future mainline Pokemon games.
Pokemon Winds and Waves’ Battle System Will Be Turn-Based, But “Tweaked”
According to the leak account Centro Leaks, the battle system in Pokemon Winds and Waves will be a bit different from the one in the most recent Pokemon games. It’s expected to be more focused on traditional turn-based battles, but will still include some of the freedom of movement and ability to target multiple Pokemon seen in Pokemon Legends. This isn’t entirely unexpected, as many Pokemon moves have always been able to hit multiple opponents. However, the game will also feature area-of-effect (AoE) moves, similar to those in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. These AoE moves could potentially be used to strategically control the battlefield by pushing or blocking Pokemon, adding a new level of tactical depth.

Despite this, Centro points out that Pokemon Winds and Waves is still under development. This means details could change before the game is released, and these new features might be adjusted or removed. Any changes to battling will likely depend on the game’s main battle mechanic, which many fans believe will involve the weather. It’s easy to imagine how features like open exploration, targeting multiple opponents, and area-of-effect attacks could all connect to weather effects in the game.
It’s going to be a while before we know for sure what’s happening with the next Pokemon games. If Pokemon followed its usual three-year release schedule, Pokemon Winds and Waves would be out now. While many fans anticipated a one-year delay, expecting a 2026 release, the confirmation of a 2027 release date suggests the developers are taking extra time to make Pokemon Winds and Waves as polished and high-quality as possible, or at least that’s the assumption.

There’s a bit of good news for Pokémon fans: even if the new games take a while to come out, you might not have to wait too long to start playing with the new starter Pokémon (Pombon, Gecqua, and Browlet). There are rumors that a new downloadable expansion, Pokopia, is in development to keep players engaged until Pokémon Winds and Waves is released, and it’s believed this expansion will include the starter Pokémon from the upcoming game. Fans likely won’t have to wait much longer to find out for sure.
