As a gamer, I always thought Crash Bandicoot had huge potential for a movie, right up there with Mario and Sonic. It’s got this really vibrant world and a ton of fun characters. What always set Crash apart, especially back on the PlayStation, was how cinematic it felt for a platformer. It wasn’t just jumping around – the games used cool camera angles and actually had characters talk in cutscenes! Plus, even though it was lighthearted, there was a surprisingly solid story with a lot of cool background details if you paid attention. It felt like they were building a real world, even back in the 90s.

Even years after its release, the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy continues to be popular, showing there’s a strong demand for the character. Sony could really capitalize on Crash Bandicoot’s unique, often funnier and more rebellious style compared to franchises like Super Mario Bros. and Sonic. As long as they stay true to the original characters, Crash and his friends have enough depth to carry a movie – and it doesn’t have to be a solo effort. To truly succeed, Sony should follow Mario‘s lead and create a film that celebrates PlayStation in the same way Nintendo has with the Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Securing popular figures like Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid) and Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII) proved difficult, and even fan favorites like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon were absent.

Just like the Super Mario Bros. movies are subtly building a cinematic universe similar to Super Smash Bros. by including characters like Donkey Kong, Fox McCloud, R.O.B., and Mr. Game & Watch, a Crash Bandicoot movie could do the same for PlayStation’s iconic characters. Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time already introduced a multiverse within the series, making it easy to bring Crash together with characters like Spyro, Sly Cooper, Parappa the Rapper, and newer PlayStation stars like Astro Bot. Previous attempts, like PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, focused too much on Sony’s more mature franchises such as God of War, Uncharted, Infamous, and Twisted Metal.

The Crash Bandicoot games have always been fun for everyone and fit perfectly with PlayStation’s other iconic characters. Years ago, Crash was a real rival to Mario, and now a series of Crash movies and shows could challenge Nintendo by tapping into a different kind of fond memory that people worldwide would enjoy. A successful Crash movie could even help bring back other forgotten PlayStation franchises, potentially inspiring studios like Sucker Punch to create a new Sly Cooper game. Many beloved PlayStation series have been on hold for too long, and Crash Bandicoot could be what’s needed to reintroduce them to a new generation.
