
Starting out in Subnautica 2 can be tough. You’ll quickly realize you need to manage your oxygen, many foods are poisonous, and some of the game’s systems aren’t immediately clear. But don’t worry! A few simple tips will help you survive the first few hours of the Subnautica 2 early access version without too much trouble.
Oxygen Is the Biggest Early Threat in Subnautica 2
You’ll encounter dangerous creatures and poisonous plants early in the game, but you’re more likely to run out of oxygen. If you’re having trouble staying alive, here are some helpful tips:
Craft a Standard Air Tank as Soon as You Find Silver
Building a Standard Air Tank should be one of your first goals in the game. It increases your maximum oxygen by 30, which is a big help for survival. While the Silver needed to craft it can be tricky to find at first, the added safety it provides is well worth the effort.
Use Oxygen Tunics During Long Dives
Oxygen Tunics are underwater plants that look like blue bubbles. If you touch these bubbles, they’ll refill your oxygen, so you won’t have to swim back to the surface for air.
Carry an Air Bladder
As soon as you find Lucifer Rotsac and Titanium, build an Air Bladder using the Fabricator in your Lifepod. This useful item gives you 20 oxygen instantly when you need it, and it refills automatically whenever you swim to the surface.
Water Is Easy to Solve, But Food Takes Longer
Staying hydrated and fed are essential for survival. Getting water is usually straightforward, but securing a reliable food supply will take some effort.
Water Slugs Solve Hydration Almost Immediately
I’ve discovered these amazing creatures called Water Slugs – they’re these beautiful, see-through blue things all over the ocean floor, even right near my Lifepod! The best part is, I can instantly turn them into Water at the Fabricator in my Lifepod, which makes staying hydrated so much easier. Seriously, they’re a lifesaver!
Most Food Hurts You at First
At the beginning of the game, you’ll have a condition called Digestive Incompatibility, meaning you can’t eat food made from the planet’s plants and animals. To fix this, you need to find an Angel Comb, which will give you the ability to digest these foods. You can find this comb relatively early in the game by following the clues from a black box.
Check Lifepod Storage for Emergency Food
If you’re hungry before you unlock the Digestion ability, look for Nutrient Blocks in your Lifepod’s storage. You can eat those to restore your hunger.
Start Scanning Early and Never Stop
In Subnautica 2, scanning is essential for making progress. You unlock new items like tools, bases, vehicles, and upgrades by scanning your surroundings, making the Scanner a vital piece of equipment.
Scan Everything You Encounter
Scanning is crucial, and here’s what you should focus on when using your scanner to assess your surroundings.
- Flora
- Fauna
- Tools
- Materials
- Furniture
Many Blueprints Require Multiple Scans
Scanning objects is really useful because it lets you learn how to make them yourself – things like tools, buildings, and ways to customize your base. But you usually can’t craft something just by scanning it once; often, you’ll need to find and scan two or three of the same object to unlock the blueprint.
Duplicate Scans Still Reward You
After you’ve discovered a blueprint, scanning the same object again will give you materials. Although scanning won’t be your primary method for gathering resources, it does add a useful extra function to the Scanner.
Don’t Ignore Other Tools
The Scanner is helpful, but it’s not the only important tool. Other tools can make exploring easier and even unlock new materials and locations.
The Flashlight Makes Early Exploration Much Easier
Some areas of the ocean are very dark, but you can use a Flashlight to see. You’ll need to find two Flashlights first to craft one, so be sure to search thoroughly.
The Survival Multitool Unlocks Important Materials
You can make the Survival Multitool right from the start, and it’s a good idea to do so quickly. It lets you easily get the Fibrous Pulp needed to make fiber.
The Sonic Resonator Opens Up New Areas
Building a Sonic Resonator takes effort, but it’s a crucial tool. It lets you collect resources from large nodes and break through Bloom Biofilm, opening up access to previously unreachable areas.
Inventory Space Becomes a Problem Very Quickly
You begin the game with limited space – only 20 inventory slots – which can quickly become full while collecting items. If you’re finding it hard to keep everything organized, here are some helpful tips:
Portable Lockers Help Early Exploration
During your first explorations, keep an eye out for Portable Lockers. They offer 15 extra storage spaces, letting you transfer items from your inventory and bring the lockers back to your Lifepod for more convenient storage early in the game.
Biobeds Permanently Increase Inventory Space
As you explore, you’ll discover underwater structures called Colonist Bunkers. Inside, you’ll find Biobeds that expand your inventory space, so be sure to check them out!
Take Just What You Need at the Beginning
It’s easy to get carried away collecting everything you find, but being selective with your resources early on will help manage your inventory. A helpful tip: right-click a crafting recipe in the Fabricator to display the needed materials in the top-right corner of your screen, so you always know what you’re still missing.
Silver and Lead are the exceptions – if you find them early in the game, grab as much as you can.
Your First Base Unlocks a Lot of New Systems
You can last a good amount of time in the Lifepod, but building a base unlocks key features and gets rid of many of the initial restrictions.
A Base Fabricator Removes the “Fully Functional Fabricator” Limitation
The fabricator you find in the lifepod isn’t able to create everything. To fix this, build a fabricator in your first base – it won’t have those restrictions.
Scanner Stations Make Finding Resources Much Easier
Building a Scanner Station at your base lets you pinpoint exactly where resources are located. This is incredibly helpful for gathering important materials like Silver and Lead, so it’s a good idea to build one as soon as possible.
Storage Issues Become a Thing of the Past
Building lockers in your base helps manage limited inventory space. Plus, you can have facilities automatically grab materials from nearby lockers, making crafting much easier.
Follow NOA Missions Early On
From time to time, your Lifepod’s NOA will contact you with important information. When you receive a notification, be sure to check it – it will give you directions to a black box.
Black Boxes Lead to Important Unlocks
You’ll find the first black boxes near key scanning areas, new gameplay features, and Adaptations. You can explore these spots even before you get a mission marker from the NOA, but it’s a good idea to revisit them after starting the mission just to be sure you haven’t overlooked anything important.
Check the Survival Guide
You can find a helpful Survival Guide by checking with the NOA, which you’ll see at the top of your Databank. It’s a great resource to help you get started in the game.
Some Areas Are Meant to Be Revisited Later
Let me tell you, playing Subnautica 2 is all about unlocking areas as you get better equipped. It’s not unusual to stumble upon something you can’t deal with right away. You’ll need to level up and get the right gear before you can really tackle everything this game throws at you, and honestly, I found that really satisfying.
“Requires Unknown Tool” Usually Means You Haven’t Unlocked What You Need
If you see the message “requires unknown tool” when you try to interact with something, it means you haven’t unlocked the necessary item yet. You’ll need to come back to it later once you’ve progressed further in the game.
Environmental Hazards Can Require Adaptations
Overcoming obstacles isn’t just about having the right tools – adapting to your environment is also important when exploring. For instance, you might find areas that are extremely hot, causing you to suffer from Heat Intolerance. To safely explore these areas, you’ll need to gain the Heat Tolerance Adaptation.
Movement Upgrades Make Exploration Much More Enjoyable
You might feel a bit slow to start, but luckily there are ways to quickly boost your speed and become more agile in the early part of the game.
Fins Are A Great Early Crafting Upgrade
Collect Lucifer Rotsac and Fibrous Pulp quickly. You can combine these materials to create Rubber and Fiber, which are essential for crafting Fins that give you a slight speed increase.
Biomods Can Fundamentally Change Exploration
Biomods are upgrades you can get at Biolabs that improve your abilities, like how quickly you move. The Dash Biomod lets you quickly boost forward, and the Sea Skimmer makes you swim faster both on the surface and at the bottom of the ocean. You’ll eventually build a Biolab for your base, but you can find one early on by powering up the Welcome Center, which is located 85 meters southeast of your Lifepod.
The Wakemaker Combines Mobility and Visibility
Once you find and scan the Wakemaker, it’s a tool that makes it easier to move around underwater. Plus, it has a built-in light, so you can use it instead of your regular flashlight.
The Game Rewards Careful Exploration
It’s easy to rush when trying to reach your destination, but there are good reasons to be careful and take your time.
Wrecks and Small Structures Hide Important Scans
When exploring shipwrecks, search thoroughly for valuable items to scan. Also, keep an eye out for hidden Colonist Bunkers – often found in caves – which let you expand your inventory. Underwater lights are a good clue to help you locate them.
Rare Materials Are Hidden in Specific Environments
Silver and Lead can be scarce when you first start playing, and it’s easy to overlook the places where you can gather them. If you miss these resources, it can slow down your progress, especially when trying to get key upgrades like the Air Tank, and make exploring the world more challenging.
Returning to Earlier Areas Is Worthwhile
Once you get upgrades like the Air Tank and Sonic Resonator, it’s a good idea to revisit earlier areas. These tools will let you reach new places and find things you couldn’t before.
