In games where players make a lot of choices, including who they can romance, these relationships can feel like tasks to complete rather than natural parts of the story. On the other hand, in games with a fixed storyline, romance can feel unnatural or unconvincing if it isn’t carefully crafted and developed.
Both interactive and story-driven romances can be really effective, offering different ways to create a compelling love story – whether it’s shaped by your choices or a fixed plot. What makes a romance ‘great’ is subjective, but these six pairings consistently stand out as some of the most emotionally resonant and well-told in video games.
6. Jill and Clive (Final Fantasy 16)
Childhood Friends Turned Steadfast Allies
Jill Warrick is a key character in the exciting game Final Fantasy 16, and she plays a crucial role in the story and in the life of the main character, Clive. She arrived in Rosaria as a young political hostage and grew up with Clive and his brother, Joshua, becoming close friends with both of them. Though they were later separated, Clive and Jill eventually reunited as powerful warriors, each possessing a unique Eikon, and worked together to free the people of Valisthea.
Jill and Clive have a uniquely strong bond built on years of shared experiences and mutual respect. Jill is independent and grows as an individual alongside Clive, never feeling like she needs to depend on him. Similarly, Clive doesn’t feel the need to take care of Jill; he genuinely trusts and relies on her judgment and abilities.
As they continued to support each other, their feelings grew into love. They didn’t try to hide it, and their relationship reached a beautiful peak of honesty and respect. This makes the events at the end especially heartbreaking, and leaves their future uncertain.
5. V and Panam (Cyberpunk 2077)
The True Embodiment of “Ride or Die”
Panam Palmer is a character you meet early in the story of Cyberpunk 2077. She’s a member of the Aldecaldos, a nomadic tribe, and plays a significant role in the main questline, even having her own unique ending. Panam is independent and doesn’t like being told what to do, but she’s also strong, determined, and good at finding solutions. She values loyalty above all else and expects the same commitment from those she cares about.
The connection between V and Panam is special because it’s founded on strong trust and working together. Although they initially flirt, Panam truly starts to trust V when he consistently supports her. She’s figuring out who she is, and having someone who stands by her through her mistakes and as she gains independence is incredibly important to her.
Panam is fiercely loyal to V, consistently helping him with his missions and facing the challenges posed by Arasaka, even as the Relic threatens to overwhelm his mind. This dedication is most evident at the game’s climax. If V seeks the Aldecaldos’ assistance in attacking Arasaka Tower, Panam enthusiastically rallies them to his side, bringing Saul and the rest of the crew into the fight.
The ‘Star’ ending is satisfying even if V isn’t in a relationship with Panam, but it’s especially impactful if they are close. Regardless of romance, this ending reframes the story, offering a small sense of hope amidst a bleak setting. While V might still succumb to the relic’s effects and there’s no guarantee of a cure, this ending allows you to spend your final days with loved ones, making the inevitable a little easier.
4. Liara and Commander Shephard (Mass Effect 1-3)
Mutual Growth and Trust Lead to Unwavering Dedication
As a gamer, I think the Mass Effect series is BioWare’s masterpiece. It’s just so well-built and detailed, really showing how powerful role-playing can be in a game world that feels totally real. And while there are a ton of great characters to romance throughout the trilogy, Liara stands out to me as the most fully developed and interesting. What’s really cool is that her story and romance arc actually continues across all three games, even with everything that happens in Mass Effect 2 – it feels like a real, ongoing relationship.
I’ve always loved Liara’s story in the Mass Effect games. In the first one, she’s a little inexperienced and really looks up to Commander Shepard for guidance, especially when dealing with her emotions. It’s so sweet watching her and Shepard fall for each other, but it’s also about Liara learning to think for herself and make her own decisions. Then, in the second game, when Shepard… well, when things happen, it’s heartbreaking. Liara really changes; she becomes much tougher and more reserved, driven by her determination to bring Shepard back and help them succeed.
The last game in the trilogy finally brings Shepard and Liara together permanently. Though players could explore a romantic connection with Liara in a previous expansion, she becomes a core member of the crew in this final installment. The game lets them openly discuss their relationship, including any past issues or time apart, and truly connect. It’s a touching story about how both characters have grown throughout the series and how their journeys come together. It leaves fans wondering what role Liara might play in the next Mass Effect game and how Shepard will be involved.
3. Triss or Yennifer and Geralt (The Witcher 3)
He Has a Thing for Sorceresses—Don’t Worry About It
I know I can’t avoid the strong feelings people have about whether Geralt should end up with Yennefer or Triss. The fans of the books and games have debated this for years, and new stories always bring different opinions. However, while both romantic paths in The Witcher 3 are equally good, they appeal to different understandings of the story and its characters – both from the original books and the games themselves.
The reason to believe Geralt and Yen should stay together is straightforward: their connection is deeply rooted in the lore of the books. They’ve experienced everything together – love, loss, conflict, and even parenthood – but always find their way back to each other. While Yen has become a little more approachable since the game’s storyline diverged from the books, she still maintains her strong, independent personality.
She simply doesn’t know how to act differently, and Geralt understands this, though he doesn’t always show it. They share a deep connection and affection, even though it’s often unclear if their feelings are genuine throughout the story.
Triss’s relationship with Geralt is more nuanced. In the books, they share a brief, magically-fueled connection, but she isn’t a major love interest for him – more of a supporting character. However, the games develop her into a fully fleshed-out character. Their connection unfolds over three games, evolving from initial attraction into a relationship founded on genuine care, respect, and happiness.
Choosing the “best” version really comes down to what each player prefers. However, fans of the books might notice some differences between the characters in the games and how they’re portrayed in the novels. The key question for longtime fans will be how much these new versions change the established story and relationships. Will things stay true to the source material, or will they evolve? Despite these considerations, both versions offer a rewarding ending for Geralt and his companion.

2. Yuna and Tidus (Final Fantasy 10)
Hope and Appreciation in the Face of Certain Tragedy
At the start of Final Fantasy 10, Tidus seems a little immature, arrogant, and quick to complain. But beneath that exterior, he’s actually a very kind person who’s always eager to help others, even strangers. When he learns a summoner might be in danger at the Besaid Cloister of Trials, he immediately jumps into a situation he doesn’t understand, wanting to do whatever he can. This is how Tidus and Yuna first meet: he arrives ready to rescue her, only to find she’s already completed her trial and doesn’t need saving.
Even so, Yuna is grateful for the kind thought, and Tidus joins her on the journey to Luca. As they travel, they become closer and share many heartfelt moments. Wanting to cheer Yuna up and show his support, Tidus makes plans for future adventures, unaware that Yuna’s pilgrimage will ultimately require her to sacrifice herself to bring peace through a Calm.
People have commented on the uncomfortable scenes, like when the couple pretends to laugh on the balcony while others watch. However, these little moments actually reveal how close they are and how much they’ve developed as a couple. They demonstrate their strong dedication to each other and to doing what’s right, even when things are difficult and painful.
Throughout the game, Tidus and Yuna both develop and mature, learning from the people of Spira and growing closer to each other. This personal growth is likely why the ending of Final Fantasy 10 is so emotionally powerful. Although Tidus helps Yuna avoid being sacrificed by the Yevon religion, he doesn’t tell her that defeating Yu Yevon will also cause him to vanish. In a heartbreaking farewell, Yuna expresses her love for Tidus as he jumps from the airship and disappears.
While Tidus and Yuna’s story continues in Final Fantasy 10-2 and the novel Final Fantasy 10-2.5 ~Eien no Daishō~, the original Final Fantasy 10 has the most well-developed narrative of the series and is considered one of the best role-playing games of all time.

A Love That Spans the Ages
In Xenogears, Fei and Elly begin their relationship as rivals. Elly, a member of Solaris’s elite forces, initially tries to capture Fei and the powerful Gear, Weltall, even threatening him with a gun. Despite this rough start, they eventually fall in love, leading Elly to abandon her post and join Fei in his fight.
Their relationship isn’t smooth sailing; they often argue and hurt each other’s feelings before making up and admitting how they really feel. Just as they start building a genuine connection, things get complicated – which is typical for the world of Xenogears.
Fei and Elly share a connection that spans lifetimes, as they are revealed to be reborn throughout history. Fei is known as the Contact, someone who can communicate with a powerful force called the Wave Existence, and is the latest reincarnation of the first person with this ability, Abel. Elly, also known as Elehayym, consistently reappears in his life, repeatedly sacrificing herself for him. Over ten thousand years, they’ve been reborn, found each other again, and tragically been torn apart, leaving Fei and his past selves haunted by loss and self-inflicted emotional pain.
Ultimately, Elly and Fei’s love conquers everything, even the opposition of powerful forces. They finally return home to their friends, confident that their love is real and has a future.
