The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a heartfelt tribute to Mario, one of the most iconic characters in video game history, and a nod to the beloved Nintendo Wii game, Super Mario Galaxy. While critics had mixed reactions, the film has been a huge commercial success for Nintendo, proving they can create blockbuster movies as well as games. Just over a month and a half after its release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has already become the highest-grossing film of the year.
The first Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge success, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films ever made. Now, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is proving to be just as popular. It’s currently the top-grossing movie in the U.S. for 2026, having earned over $413 million domestically, and recently broke box office records in Japan, according to Oricon News.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is Officially the Highest Grossing Foreign Film in Japan For 2026
Even though Nintendo and Super Mario Bros. originated in Japan, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was made with Illumination, an American studio. This makes it an American film, and therefore considered a foreign film in Japan, according to Oricon News.
The latest Super Mario movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, came out on April 24th and has already earned over ¥6 billion (about $38 million) as of May 12th. This makes it the highest-grossing foreign film released in Japan so far this year. After seven weeks in international theaters, the film has exceeded $500 million worldwide, reaching a total of $528.76 million. Overall, the movie is a huge success, with total box office earnings of $941.36 million.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is currently playing in theaters around the world and is on track to potentially earn over $1 billion, which would be another huge success for Nintendo and Illumination. The original Super Mario Bros. Movie earned a total of $1.36 billion during its time in theaters.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the Second Highest Grossing Movie in Japan This Year
As a huge cinema fan, I was fascinated to learn that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie didn’t just become the biggest foreign film in Japan for 2026 – it actually landed as the second highest-grossing movie overall! It was only beaten by the latest Detective Conan film, Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway. Honestly, that doesn’t surprise me at all. The Detective Conan (or Case Closed) series is massively popular there, and their movies consistently perform incredibly well at the Japanese box office.
The latest Detective Conan movie is a huge hit in Japan, drawing large crowds and earning $72.8 million at the box office. This puts it well ahead of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned almost $38 million less. Even though The Super Mario Bros. Movie didn’t reach the same heights, its success shows how popular Nintendo and Mario remain, both in Japan and around the world.
