For the last eight years, RDR 2 has consistently been ranked among the best video games of all time, including in a recent poll by TopMob. This is a remarkable accomplishment in the industry, and the game continues to gain appreciation as players discover new details and the immense care that went into creating its captivating Wild West story.

Look, ever since playing Red Dead Redemption 2, I’ve been hunting for another game that can scratch that same itch. Nothing quite measures up yet (though I’m hoping for something this November!), and it’s tough to find a game with that same level of detail, a gripping story, and characters that feel real. But there are a bunch of new Wild West games coming out in 2026 that are trying to deliver a similar experience. They’re focusing on things like riding horses, exploring a huge open world, and just trying to survive in a tough frontier setting. So, I wanted to share some of the most promising upcoming games that feel like they could be the next Red Dead Redemption 2.

We’re aiming to recommend games very similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, so we’re leaving out upcoming open-world games with horses just because of those features. This means you won’t see titles like Fable or The Witcher 4 on our list.

Grand Theft Auto 6

Considering its technical advancements, how reactive the world is, its scale, attention to detail, characters, and the freedom it offers players, GTA 6 is shaping up to be a truly innovative game – likely the closest experience to Red Dead Redemption 2 we’ve seen in years, even though it’s set in modern America. While past GTA games haven’t matched the storytelling impact of Red Dead, there’s optimism that GTA 6 could be different, perhaps moving away from pure satire and embracing a more serious approach – at least partially. Regardless, fans can anticipate Rockstar revisiting the Red Dead series eventually, but it’s best not to hold your breath – it will probably be another ten years before we see a new installment.

The Legend of Khiimori

Okay, so I’ve been checking out The Legend of Khiimori, and it’s actually already playable on PC in early access – people are really liking it so far! But the full game and console versions are still on the way, so it feels like a new title worth talking about. Basically, imagine Red Dead Redemption 2 mixed with Death Stranding, but instead of the Wild West or a post-apocalyptic world, it’s set in 13th-century Mongolia. It’s all about a gorgeous open world where you’re surviving and exploring, and seriously, horses are huge. Get ready for Frontier Legends, a new game launching on PC in early access this May. While it’s currently only planned for PC, it’s unclear if it will eventually come to consoles. If you loved Red Dead Redemption 2, this game might be for you – it’s the closest experience we’ve seen in a while, offering a similar Wild West setting and plenty of freedom to roleplay. Frontier Legends is designed like a more open-ended version of Red Dead Online, letting you live out your cowboy dreams in a vast, open world focused on horseback riding, surviving, exploring, and crafting.

In Frontier Legends, you build a life as a pioneer in the Wild West, choosing your path as anything from a hunter and trader to a rancher, builder, outlaw, or law enforcer. You begin with a small campsite that you can develop into a bustling settlement, managing its growth and assigning tasks to the people who live there – similar to building up a base in games like Crimson Desert. The game focuses on exploring and surviving in the American wilderness, letting you tame horses, search for treasure, and investigate ancient ruins filled with puzzles. Okay, so playing Red Rust Pioneers feels a lot like being a pioneer heading west – you’re traveling with your wagon, setting up camp, and trying to find that perfect spot to build a life. It’s not super complicated like some other games, such as Westlanders, where you’re managing a whole economy. This one is more about the simple things – just surviving and thriving in the wilderness. I’m talking horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and farming to get through each season. And just like Westlanders, you can play it by yourself or team up with up to four friends in co-op. Splitting the work and conquering the West with friends is definitely the way to go!

The Legend of California

Coming: TBA 2026

The Legend of California feels both new and reminiscent of other Western survival games. But instead of just offering another open-world cowboy experience, it really stands out by prioritizing exciting multiplayer action – both cooperative and competitive, much like Red Dead Online. Set on California Island during the Gold Rush, the game focuses on challenging multiplayer battles in a dynamic world featuring diverse environments and famous California locations.

In The Legend of California, you’ll fight to survive using realistic guns, all while dealing with dangerous animals and hostile outlaws. You can earn money by raiding enemy camps or even challenging other players to duels. While you can play the game alone, focusing on survival, crafting, and building, it seems like teaming up with others will be more rewarding, especially with so many similar Western games coming out. To stand out, The Legend of California needs exciting action and compelling stories, so hopefully, the gunfights are just as engaging as building your ranch or running a gold mine in the wild frontier.
