Valve released the Steam Controller earlier this month, but it quickly sold out due to scalpers. Many fans struggled to buy one at the original price because scalpers bought up the available stock and resold it on sites like eBay for up to three times the cost. Within an hour, the initial supply was gone. To address this, Valve has implemented a new reservation system to prevent scalping, and they may use it for the Steam Machine as well.
Valve hasn’t announced when the Steam Machine will be released or how much it will cost, but they say it’s still expected before the end of the year. When details are finally revealed and pre-orders begin, Valve might implement measures to prevent people from buying up all the units just to resell them at a higher price.
The Steam Controller is currently available through a reservation system. If you sign up, you’ll be added to a waiting list and emailed when one is available for purchase. You’ll have 72 hours to complete your order, or the controller will be offered to someone else. Each person can only reserve one controller, and to be eligible, you must have purchased a game on Steam before April 27, 2026.
Checking if a buyer has previously purchased and played games on Steam is crucial, as scalpers often create brand new, empty accounts. Valve is trying to prevent this by requiring buyers to have a history of purchases before a specific date. While this isn’t a perfect solution – scalpers could still use an eligible account belonging to someone else – it significantly complicates their efforts, forcing them to wait in line and limiting each account to purchasing only one item.
A recent Steam update revealed details about several Steam Machine packages (including models with 512GB and 2TB of storage), as spotted by user Pepeizq. These packages appear to use the same pre-order reservation system Valve previously used for the Steam Controller, suggesting pre-orders for the new Steam Machine could be opening soon. This discovery has fueled speculation that Valve is preparing to announce the official release date and price of the console/PC hybrid.
