Popular online shooters don’t last forever, as the efforts of groups like Stop Killing Games demonstrate. Many classic first-person shooters have had their servers closed, essentially ending the games. Luckily, on PC, players often step in to create unofficial servers, allowing us to still enjoy titles like 10Six, Chromehounds, Global Agenda, and Infantry Online as of 2026. However, some truly great FPS games haven’t been so lucky, and we can only remember them now.
Let’s remember some great games that didn’t last as long as we’d hoped. Even though they faded from the spotlight, people still talk about them online and in articles, keeping their memory alive. Perhaps, someday, we’ll even see them make a comeback.
Calling something ‘legendary‘ isn’t the same as saying it’s ‘great.’ You’ll understand why I’m pointing this out as we go along, especially when you see the featured image.

MAG
The Best Large-Scale FPS MMO On Consoles Has Been Dead Since 2014
True console exclusives, especially online games, are uncommon these days. But back in 2010, MAG was a standout title, launching only on the PlayStation 3. This ambitious massively multiplayer online shooter pushed the boundaries of console gaming with its huge 256-player battles. Quickly becoming a signature PS3 game, MAG combined large-scale faction warfare with focused, team-based gameplay. It struck a great balance – objectives were clear, and players felt like their actions truly mattered. Players could even earn promotions and take on leadership roles, changing how they contributed to the battles.
Despite attempts by fans to keep it running, MAG remains unplayable as of May 2026, and it doesn’t look like that will change soon. Of all the classic, but broken, first-person shooters we’ve covered, MAG‘s failure is particularly disappointing, as there hasn’t been a truly satisfying game to take its place. Will Sony ever bring MAG back? It’s hard to say. While Sony seems to be focusing on online multiplayer games, there’s been no news about a potential revival of MAG.
Evolve
The Asymmetrical Multiplayer Game Before Dead By Daylight
These days, we see a lot of games where a few players take on one powerful opponent, so new ones often don’t make much of a splash. But back in 2014, Evolve was a standout title, launching over a year before Dead by Daylight. Its concept – a team of hunters versus a huge monster – still feels inventive, especially since many similar games focus on simply escaping a scary villain. Evolve played a lot like a classic first-person shooter, with hunters each having specific roles, which could have attracted a wider audience. Plus, the monsters weren’t just cool designs – they felt unique and actually changed during the match, eventually becoming the ones doing the hunting.
Despite being around for a while, the game Evolve faced immediate problems thanks to its publisher, 2K. It launched with a full $59.99 price tag, even though it only had three playable monsters. To make things worse, the game’s aggressive push for extra purchases overshadowed everything else at launch, putting Evolve on the back foot right away. Even with all these issues, Evolve still found a dedicated player base that continued playing until the servers were shut down. While PC players can still find ways to play, the console version is now essentially just a practice mode.
Overwatch (2016 Original)
A Simpler, Better Time
Even though Blizzard removed the number from the sequel and sometimes hosts “Overwatch: Classic” events with older character options, the original Overwatch is effectively gone. Its demise feels particularly calculated – Blizzard clearly discontinued the original game to push players towards the new version, making it a more cynical end than many other similar games have seen.
Overwatch felt truly special when it first launched, and it’s impossible to recreate that initial excitement years later. Back in 2016, it was a fresh and innovative take on team-based shooters like Team Fortress 2, with heroes that were bursting with unique personalities. Personally, I don’t miss the current version of Overwatch; I miss how amazing it felt to play back in 2016. But despite that, I believe the game still has potential and deserves to thrive.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Online On Consoles)
The Best Battlefield Game Is A Shell Of What It Used To Be
On December 8, 2023, EA stopped supporting online servers for several older Battlefield games, including Bad Company 2. These games were also removed from digital stores earlier in the year, making them unavailable for purchase. This isn’t the first time EA has done this with older titles, and unfortunately, it won’t be the last.
Okay, so you can still play the single-player campaign in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and honestly, it’s still a blast. But let’s be real, Battlefield is all about the multiplayer for most of us – it’s where the real fun is. Taking that away basically kills the whole experience. And now, it’s even harder to get into the single-player mode, which is a bummer. PC players have this awesome thing called Project Rome that lets them still play online, but if you’re on console, you’re just out of luck when it comes to Bad Company 2 multiplayer. It’s pretty frustrating.
Concord
A Legendary Cautionary Tale
Look, I’ll be honest, Concord had a rough launch – two weeks and it was already struggling. But it’s kinda infamous now, isn’t it? It’s become the perfect example of a game that just jumped on a trend without bringing anything new to the table, especially with how crowded the market already is. If Sony hadn’t pulled the plug so quickly and actually kept the servers up for a year, Concord probably would’ve faded away like so many other multiplayer games that didn’t catch on – think Lawbreakers or XDefiant. It just didn’t have what it needed to stand out.
However, Concord failed so quickly and publicly that it became legendary. Mission accomplished?
