8 Most Challenging Areas in Soulslikes

Games in the ‘Souls-like’ genre share several key features: challenging boss battles, extensive character customization, and a rich, often hidden, backstory that players uncover themselves. But perhaps the most common element in all these games is having one particular area that’s much more difficult than the rest.

These sections of the game act as tests of your skills, specifically how well you’ve learned the combat. They typically feature stronger enemies, tight spaces that are difficult to move through, and a challenging boss fight at the end.

We’ve played through some of the hardest Soulslike games to find the most difficult areas. Here’s our list of the top 10 most challenging spots in the genre.

8. Blighttown β€” Dark Souls

Death Around Every Corner

Blighttown, a location in the original Dark Souls, is notorious for being one of the hardest areas in any ‘Souls-like’ game. Its difficulty stems from tight, winding paths built high above the ground, filled with enemies. Players often find themselves accidentally falling to their deaths while trying to fight in these cramped, precarious spaces.

As a fan, let me tell you, Blighttown is terrifying! Not only do you have to watch out for enemies, but they can also poison you, and that poison drains your health fast. You need to have the right item on hand to cure it, or you’re in trouble. Honestly, the whole area just makes you super anxious because you’re constantly worried about getting poisoned, being jumped by something, or just falling to your doom with one wrong step. It’s a really stressful place!

7. Bilewater β€” Hollow Knight: Silksong

Inflicted With Poison

Bilewater is widely considered the hardest area in Hollow Knight: Silksong, a game already known for its difficulty. It features incredibly precise platforming challenges and is covered in poison that quickly depletes your health. A single mistake while platforming almost always leads to being poisoned, putting you in a very dangerous situation.

To make things even harder, players will face tough enemies throughout Bilewater. As a late-game area, these enemies are quite challenging and require several hits to defeat. The good news is that Bilewater is optional, so players can choose to skip it if they prefer. But for those aiming to complete everything in Hollow Knight: Silksong, facing this area is a must.

6. Miquella’s Haligtree β€” Elden Ring

This Secret Area is Brutal

Miquella’s Haligtree is widely considered the most difficult area in Elden Ring, with Caelid not far behind. Its challenge comes from a combination of frustrating enemies – like Misbegotten, Battlemages, Giant Miranda Sprouts, and Putrid Avatars – and a complex, vertical layout. This makes navigating the Haligtree and surviving a real struggle.

This area is home to the game’s toughest boss, Malenia, Blade of Miquella. Even those unfamiliar with Elden Ring have likely heard of her. Malenia became notorious at the game’s launch because she presents a huge challenge. She’s incredibly quick, deals massive damage, and most players will need around 20 tries to defeat her. Facing her after navigating the difficult path through Miquella’s Haligtree only adds to the frustration.

5. Frigid Outskirts β€” Dark Souls 2

Blinded by the Snow

The Frigid Outskirts in Dark Souls 2 is a tough area for several reasons, but the constant blizzards are the biggest problem. These storms frequently obscure your vision, making it hard to see where you’re going and easy to get lost. The poor visibility also makes it difficult to spot enemies, leading to surprise attacks and avoidable damage.

The Frigid Outskirts is a particularly challenging area in Dark Souls 2. Unlike other parts of the game where a torch can help you navigate, you’ll have to rely on careful movement and a bit of luck to get through. Enemies here are incredibly fast, attack in relentless combos, and frequently stun you, making it difficult to heal. The constant blizzard makes this area the hardest in the game – without it, it would be much more manageable.

4. Ashina Castle β€” Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

A True Test of Reflexes

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is known for being one of FromSoftware’s most challenging games. Unlike the Dark Souls series, which emphasizes dodging and learning enemy moves, Sekiro requires players to be constantly on the offensive and skillfully deflect attacks. The Ashina Castle area is where the game really puts your skills to the test, forcing you to embrace this aggressive style. While you can play more cautiously earlier in the game, that strategy won’t work in Ashina Castle.

Ashina Castle is a significant jump in difficulty, with enemies who relentlessly attack. They’re skilled at blocking your attacks, interrupting your healing, and constantly keeping you on the defensive. This challenging area often stops players in their tracks, and many find it too difficult to overcome.

3. Fishing Hamlet β€” Bloodborne

To the Point of Exhaustion

Fishing Hamlet is a notoriously difficult level in Bloodborne, known for its incredibly tough enemies that have a lot of health and attack relentlessly. Throughout most of the game, Bloodborne encourages players to be aggressive, both to inflict damage and maintain their health. But Fishing Hamlet changes that – it severely punishes overly aggressive play. Enemies hit very hard, often come in large groups, and many attacks can quickly defeat characters with lower health.

Fishing Hamlet is considered Bloodborne’s most challenging area partly because it comes after a series of incredibly tough encounters. Players have already faced grueling challenges like Hunter’s Nightmare, Ludwig, Research Hall, Living Failures, and Lady Maria. Reaching Fishing Hamlet after all that can be mentally draining.

2. Ancient Ruins β€” Lies of P: Overture

A Spike in Difficulty

Lies of P was already a difficult game, but its ‘Overture’ DLC introduced even harder areas. While the whole DLC is challenging, players struggled the most with the Ancient Ruins. This area is packed with powerful enemies that require careful defense – precise dodging and parrying are essential. What makes these enemies so tough is that their attacks aren’t immediate, making them hard to anticipate and react to.

The Ancient Ruins are challenging not just because of the tough enemies, but also because of the tight, uneven pathways. This forces players to move cautiously and strategically, unlike other areas where they can rush ahead. The narrow spaces also make it difficult for the camera to track everything, sometimes giving you a poor view of enemies and interfering with targeting.

1. Path of Pain β€” Hollow Knight

Where Platforming is the Boss

Hollow Knight is famous for its hidden secrets and amazing boss battles, but it also features excellent platforming. Some of these platforming sections are so difficult, they feel like bosses themselves. The Path of Pain is the most notorious example – a long, relentless challenge that demands quick reactions, perfect timing, and a lot of patience to overcome.

It took me over five hours to finish Path of Pain because I kept failing. It’s a really challenging course where you have to quickly jump over spikes, climb walls, dash through narrow spaces, use your wings strategically, bounce off enemies, and dodge traps. You really need to learn from each attempt and remember the layout to improve. Path of Pain is incredibly difficult, and only highly skilled players will be able to complete it.
