Star Fox Reveals Cheaper Price Point, But There’s a Catch

The next Star Fox game coming to the Switch 2 won’t cost the full price of a new game, though the cheapest way to get it will be to download it digitally. It’s been a decade since a new Star Fox game was released – not counting the SNES sequel Nintendo brought back in 2017 – and a new installment is finally on the way. However, some details about how it will be released aren’t as appealing to fans.

Following months of speculation, Nintendo officially announced the next Star Fox game on May 6th, with a release date surprisingly close – June 25, 2026. While some fans were hoping for a completely original title, it’s actually a remake of Star Fox 64. However, the trailer showcased a good amount of new content and updated features. Nintendo hadn’t initially revealed the price, but they’ve now clarified it, and the news is a bit of a mixed bag.

Star Fox’s Digital Edition is Cheaper than the Physical Version

The Nintendo Store has listed Star Fox for the new Switch 2, revealing the digital version will cost $49.99 and the physical copy $59.99. While both prices are lower than the usual $70 for big Nintendo games, some players might not like paying an extra $10 for the physical cartridge. This price difference isn’t entirely unexpected, as Nintendo previously announced that some physical games would cost more than digital versions, similar to what happened with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. However, it’s still disappointing for gamers who prefer to buy physical copies of games.

Nintendo has faced criticism for its approach to physical game copies on its newest console. While prices are a concern, gamers dislike the Switch 2’s “Game-Key Cards” because they’re just download codes in a case, offering none of the usual advantages of owning a physical game. Fortunately, Nintendo has stated that its own first-party Switch 2 games won’t use these cards. This means that if you buy a physical copy of a game like Star Fox, you’ll get the full game on the cartridge, which might make the higher price more acceptable.

Although buying physical games has benefits like saving storage and truly owning your games, the price of Star Fox makes digital copies a more attractive option. With Nintendo potentially raising prices on the upcoming Switch 2, choosing a cheaper digital game now could save you money. It’s currently unclear if this trend of different pricing for physical and digital games will continue—it hasn’t been consistent with Switch games so far—but it seems to be becoming more common.
