Paranormal Activity Game Cancelled Because Paramount Wanted to Rush Devs

A new horror game based on the ‘Paranormal Activity’ movies has been cancelled. The game’s creator, who also made the popular indie horror game ‘The Mortuary Assistant’, said Paramount Pictures wouldn’t give them enough time to finish the game properly. They were forced to choose between quickly finishing a flawed game or ending their partnership with Paramount.

Brian Clarke, the developer of The Mortuary Assistant, announced on social media that Paranormal Activity: Threshold has been cancelled. This decision came because Paramount wanted the game released too quickly, and didn’t allow the developers, Darkstone Digital and DreadXP, enough time to finish it properly.

Clarke said in the statement:

It became obvious the game required more development time to reach its full potential. DreadXP supported my request for an extension, and we jointly asked Paramount for one. Unfortunately, Paramount declined. This left me with a difficult decision: either quickly finish the game and release something I wouldn’t be happy with, or end our partnership. I ultimately chose to separate from the project.

Paranormal Activity: Threshold was showcased at PAX East last year and received a very enthusiastic response from players. However, the developers have decided to cancel the game. This situation highlights the challenges of working with established franchises and how tight deadlines can impact both the project and the people making it.

The game was planned to be based on the world of the well-known found footage horror film series. Unfortunately, there’s very little information available about it online – aside from a brief trailer – making it a sadly missed opportunity.

Capcom recently released a free update for Resident Evil Requiem, adding a difficult new minigame for players to try. You can find all the details here.
