Overwatch is hosting a new event called Junkrat’s Loot Hunt! From now until May 12th, players will earn double Battle Pass XP. This is a great time to play and level up your Battle Pass, especially with a mid-Season 2 update coming soon.
Junkrat’s Loot Hunt is a recurring event in Overwatch designed to give players a reason to play when there aren’t major updates happening. During the event, you can earn up to nine free Loot Boxes simply by playing the game. The first version of the event in June 2025 required players to reach daily goals, but later versions allowed progress to continue throughout the entire weekend, making it easier to earn rewards.

Junkrat’s Loot Hunt is back for the first half of Overwatch 2’s Reign of Talon Season 2! Between now and May 12th, you can earn up to nine free Loot Boxes just by playing the game. Plus, you’ll earn double the Battle Pass XP from each match, making this event even more rewarding.

Junkrat’s Loot Hunt is progressing similarly to recent in-game events, like the Overwatch and Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred collaboration. You earn a Loot Box after playing five matches. Playing in Stadium mode or winning a match counts as double progress. However, you need to fully earn each Loot Box before progress can be applied to the next one – any extra progress doesn’t roll over. So, even if you’re almost to the next Loot Box and win a game, that progress won’t be saved until you’ve claimed the current one.
The XP boost affects the Battle Pass XP that Overwatch players get from finishing matches. Normally, you earn between 700 and 1,000 XP per match, with more awarded for winning and playing longer games. Grouping up with friends gives you a 20% XP bonus, and choosing popular roles when queuing adds an extra 100 to 500 XP. With the double XP boost active, players who take advantage of all these bonuses can earn over 2,000 Battle Pass XP from a single win.
A great update is coming to Overwatch at just the right time! Season 2 of Reign of Talon began on April 15th and runs until June 16th, meaning we’ll likely see a mid-season update around May 12th, as Junkrat’s in-game event ends. While details are still coming, players can look forward to Jetpack Cat arriving in Stadium mode, and a new Mythic skin for Ana, the support hero, becoming available in the shop. The update will also include balance changes, probably with some adjustments to Sierra, the new damage-dealing hero introduced this season.
With Season 3 arriving in just over a month, fans can expect to start seeing previews of what’s coming to Overwatch, including the next playable character. Leaks suggest this new hero will be a Damage-focused character, playing similarly to Cassidy. Gamers will have to wait for the official reveal to confirm how accurate these rumors are.
