A New Day For AEW Video Games is Hopefully Right Around the Corner

With WWE recently letting several performers go, AEW fans are already discussing potential new signings once those contracts allow it. While many fans and wrestlers aren’t keen on the idea of bringing in Alistair Black due to past reports of him being unwilling to elevate other talent, there’s strong interest in Kairi Sane to bolster the women’s division after Toni Storm left. Tag team fans are excited about the possibility of dream matches featuring teams like the Motor City Machine Guns and The New Day. The New Day is especially appealing because Xavier Woods, who also goes by Austin Creed, could help AEW create another successful video game.

After news broke that The New Day had left WWE, The Young Bucks, who are executive vice presidents at AEW, fueled speculation about potential new tag team signings by sharing an old post about making a big impact. This has led many to believe AEW is planning to bring in some major talent.

Creed is a well-known figure in both the wrestling and gaming worlds, famous for things like his ‘Up Up Down Down’ code and competitive matches against Kenny Omega. While AEW has several gamers on its roster – including Ricochet, Adam Cole, and Kenny Omega – Creed has unique connections within the gaming community. Given the mixed reception to the ‘Fight Forever’ game, it’s likely Kenny Omega and others are already working on a new AEW video game. If Creed joins AEW, his involvement could be the final push needed to get that game made, potentially delivering a game that truly showcases AEW’s talent and exciting matches.

Why Another AEW Video Game is a Must

Having Austin Creed champion a new AEW video game would be a major success, especially since the recent Fight Forever game didn’t quite live up to expectations. It had several problems, including…

  • A lack of polish, with no commentary, painfully brief entrances, and dated visuals.
  • An extremely limited character creator without the option to download designs from other players.
  • A lack of match types and game modes — specifically, no GM mode served as a major letdown.
  • Expensive DLC packs featuring integral members of the AEW roster.

AEW has grown a lot lately, bringing in popular wrestlers like Will Ospreay, Kazuchika Okada, and Mercedes Mone – none of whom are in the current game, Fight Forever. Add to that updated character designs for stars like Toni Storm, the rise of new talent like Kyle Fletcher, and the introduction of new championships and pay-per-view events, and the game feels really old. While yearly sports games are often criticized for making small changes just to sell copies, waiting three years to update an AEW game is too long, considering how quickly the wrestling world changes. Releasing a new game every two years would be better, but first, they need to make another attempt at a current-generation game.

AEW’s choice to keep a retro feel, like the old Fight Forever games, is a good way to differentiate itself from the more realistic WWE 2K series. However, it’s important that the next game also updates in other areas. With such a talented commentary team – including Excalibur, Taz, Nigel McGuinness, and Bryan Danielson – adding voiceovers during matches would be a great step. Plus, wrestling fans really enjoy creating characters and running their own organizations (GM Mode), so those features should definitely be included. If the developers can deliver on these points, along with improvements to graphics and more elaborate wrestler entrances, the next Fight Forever game could be significantly better.

The New Day Would Be The Tip of the Iceberg for The Next AEW Game’s Roster

Many current AEW stars – including Megan Bayne, Willow Nightingale, Speedball Mike Bailey, Bandido, Brody King, and Konosuke Takeshita – aren’t included in the Fight Forever video game. Surprisingly, wrestlers who have moved to WWE, like CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, and Danhausen, are featured. Combined with the game’s lack of features or limited functionality, this makes Fight Forever feel outdated. Hopefully, if Austin Creed and Kofi Kingston join AEW, Creed’s passion for gaming will inspire a new game with a comprehensive roster and a more contemporary design. With AEW so successful right now, it’s a great time to revisit video games.
