Spending time with friends is always enjoyable, but it’s not always easy to get together in person. Things like bad weather, long distances, or simply not feeling up to it can make it difficult. Luckily, open-world multiplayer games offer a fantastic way to connect and have fun with friends, even when you can’t meet face-to-face.

I’ve been noticing a ton of awesome open-world games popping up lately, and a lot of them are built for playing with friends! Seriously, this year alone has seen some massive releases, and even older games are getting huge updates. If you’re like me and love a good sandbox to mess around in with your buddies, here are eight games I think you should definitely check out.

Valheim

Prepare for the Halls of Valhalla

In this survival game, you’ll explore a dangerous world inspired by Norse mythology, gathering materials by foraging, hunting, mining, and farming. These resources are used to build bases, craft tools, and create weapons to defend yourself against the creatures and challenging bosses you encounter. The ultimate goal is to prove you’re worthy of Valhalla, and the game, Valheim, reflects that with its harsh and unforgiving environment.

Valheim is a fantastic game to play with friends. Working together as a team makes gathering materials and building your base much faster. Plus, tackling challenges and fighting enemies becomes easier when you cooperate – you can handle bigger threats like wolf attacks or complete escort missions with more ease than if you were playing by yourself.

If you prefer a game with a strong focus on roleplaying, having multiple players is really helpful for specializing. Each person can concentrate on a specific skill – like one focusing on cooking while another improves their blacksmithing – so everyone can become an expert in a particular area instead of trying to do everything.

Palworld

Things Are More Fun With Pals

In Palworld, the main gameplay involves catching creatures called Pals. These Pals can then help you build a base, explore the world, and fight enemies. They’re incredibly versatile, able to perform tasks and collect resources for you automatically, freeing you up to focus on other things.

Playing with friends makes the game much more enjoyable and productive. You can build your base faster and work together to achieve common goals. Friends can help you get items you need or defeat tough enemies, making any challenge easier to overcome. By collaborating, you’ll be amazed at what you can create!

You can also trade Pals with your friends. If a friend has a Pal you’d like and doesn’t need it, you can easily swap it for one of your own. Plus, the arena lets friends compete against each other to see whose Pals are the strongest!

Grounded 2

Cutting Bugs Down to Size

In Grounded 2, players once again take on the role of shrunken teenagers who have to survive in a dangerous backyard filled with giant insects and creatures. Like many cooperative games, it’s much easier to stay alive when playing with friends.

Parties let players really specialize in what they’re good at, whether it’s fighting or collecting resources. There’s also strength in numbers – it’s safer to work together, as small creatures like ants and mites are less dangerous when you’re with a group. And honestly, it’s just fun to travel with your friends riding on ants!

Far Far West

Big Sky, Bigger Problems

If you’re into Western-themed games, the early access title Far Far West is a fantastic choice – it’s received excellent reviews since its release. You play as a robot cowboy, exploring vast deserts, battling undead skeletons, and fighting off aliens. The game also lets you team up with others to complete bounties, sharing the rewards when you succeed.

The relaxed pace of Far Far West is great for groups with busy schedules. Missions are shorter, so players can join and leave as needed, without being stuck on one task for hours. It’s a lot of fun to team up with friends, battle enemies, find treasure, and hang out at the saloon!

Windrose

Take Your Crew and Find Some Treasure

Cowboys and pirates are often paired together in movies and stories, even though they come from very different worlds. If you’re looking for a pirate adventure, check out the early access game Windrose. You can team up with others to sail the seas, fight in ship battles, engage in close combat, and build bases.

A cool feature of Windrose‘s multiplayer is how it handles loot. Each player finds different items in the same chest, so what you get from a location won’t necessarily be the same as what your friend finds. This is helpful for learning crafting recipes – you learn them just by finding a new item, regardless of where it comes from.

When you visit a friend’s island, you can take advantage of their good relationships with different groups. Even if you’re well-liked by one faction, you can still buy things from a faction your friend has a better connection with. No matter how you play, adventuring on the seas with your pirate crew is always a lively experience.

One downside to playing Elden Ring with friends is that you can’t complete the whole game together unless you use a mod. While you can team up in certain areas and for boss fights, any progress you make doesn’t save to the other player’s game. Even so, exploring the world together is still a lot of fun, because Elden Ring is a truly exceptional and highly praised game.

Satisfactory

Building a Better Future, One Assembly Line at a Time

Satisfactory is a game focused on building and automation, where you team up with others to create massive, intricate factories on another planet. Once you’ve built the space elevator, you’ll gain access to even more advanced technology to help streamline production. There isn’t a traditional ending, so you can keep improving your factory and optimizing its performance as much as you like.

Although you can play Satisfactory by yourself, it’s designed for up to 8 players to collaborate and build incredibly efficient factories together. A great feature of playing with others is that everyone shares progress on key unlocks like the HUB, MAM, AWESOME shop, and Space Elevator. The game is easy to pick up and play with friends, and each co-op session is different, making Satisfactory one of the best open-world simulation games available.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Fight As One

Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a visually stunning game. Flying around Pandora on your Ikran is a fantastic experience, and the first-person view really pulls you into the beautiful forests and skies. You can even share this adventure with a friend, teaming up to fight against RDA outposts.

After playing for a few hours, you can unlock co-op mode, letting you join a friend’s world or invite them to yours. When you play quests together, progress counts for both of you. Plus, if a guest player has already finished a quest with another friend, they can skip it – so you won’t have to repeat content.

Players joining as guests will get to keep any rewards they earn, including things like ammo, crafting materials, cosmetic items, gear, weapons, and anything they’ve bought or upgraded. Since our game focuses on community, it’s great that playing with others is so beneficial.
