Dead Space Producer Doubts a Fourth Game Will Ever Happen

Dead Space is a highly praised horror series, but a fourth game is probably not going to happen. According to producer Chuck Beaver, game companies are hesitant to fund single-player games that don’t continuously generate revenue through live services, and a new Dead Space would be expensive to make. Despite positive reviews and the success of the 2023 remake, the franchise hasn’t shown enough sales to justify the investment.

In a recent interview on the FRVR Podcast, Gunpei Beaver discussed the very low probability of a fourth Dead Space game being made. He noted that while games like Resident Evil sell well – around seven million copies – companies are now prioritizing games with long-term, consistent revenue, like Fortnite. He explained that single-player games without ongoing services are seen as an outdated business model, comparing them to ‘dinosaur fossils.’

Beaver also expressed his satisfaction that the Dead Space series included three main games and a remake.

While it’s sad we couldn’t finish the story for this popular series, I understand the business side of things. After working as a producer for so long, I get why the numbers didn’t support continuing with Motive beyond the remake. It’s disappointing, but I accept it.

According to Phil Beaver, horror games have a sales threshold to justify continued development. He explained that when Frank Gibeau was at EA, they needed to sell around 5 million copies of Dead Space to make it worthwhile. Now, with increased development costs, that number is closer to 15 million units.

A report from April 2024 indicated that EA had paused development on both a remake of Dead Space 2 and a new game in the series. This suggests EA wasn’t sure these projects would be financially successful or appeal to investors.
