Housemarque’s new game, Saros, a third-person shooter with roguelike elements, has been well-received by reviewers. Despite the positive feedback, sales haven’t met expectations. Recent data indicates Saros is currently underperforming financially, with initial sales numbers even lower than those of their previous hit, Returnal.
According to Rhys Elliott at Alinea Analytics, Saros sold roughly 300,000 copies in its first two weeks. While a solid number, this is slightly behind the sales of Housemarque’s previous game, Returnal, during its initial release. This slower start could make it harder for Saros to earn back its development costs. However, Elliott believes the game will eventually become profitable, as nearly 80% of Returnal players also purchased Saros. Positive reviews and its status as a new PlayStation exclusive are currently driving sales.
Elliott stated in the report:
The game’s weak initial performance indicates it may not recoup its $76 million development cost. However, exclusive games often drive console sales, and established PlayStation fans tend to continue playing. The bulk of PlayStation’s revenue actually comes from third-party game releases and ongoing services for older titles. Many dedicated PlayStation players have already purchased Saros, demonstrating that it’s fulfilling the purpose of an exclusive game – attracting and retaining players.
Saros is the first game released by Housemarque since they were acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Previously, Housemarque published its games independently on PlayStation. As of today, Saros has received very positive reviews, with an OpenCritic score of 87, ranking it among the top 10 best-received games of the year. Reviewers have highlighted that Saros is easier to pick up and play than Housemarque’s previous game, Returnal, which some players found quite difficult.
