It’s Official: A Mobile Suit Gundam Remaster is On the Way

Several new Gundam projects were revealed in a livestream on May 15th. This includes a remastered version of the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam anime, which launched the hugely popular franchise. As Gundam approaches its 50th anniversary in 2029, fans have a lot to look forward to, such as an official Gundam convention, a large Gundam facility opening in Japan, a partnership with Hololive, and a new visual project celebrating the 30th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.

The Gundam franchise is incredibly popular and well-known. Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, it’s grown into a massive series with over 50 TV shows, movies, and original video animations in its almost 50-year history. It’s also inspired countless video games, books, comics, and, famously, plastic model kits – known as Gunpla. In fact, Gunpla dominates the Japanese model kit market, with hundreds of different kits released since the early 1980s. Interest in Gundam remains strong, with new projects constantly being announced, including the upcoming 2025 TV series Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX and the recent movie Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe. Recently, a wave of new announcements has fans especially thrilled.

Gundam-Con Event Planned for January 2027, Mobile Suit Gundam Remaster Coming in 2029

At the ‘Gundam Conference Spring 2026’ livestream on May 15th, Bandai Namco announced plans to remaster the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam anime series. This classic 43-episode show is still a fan favorite after over 50 years, and the updated version is scheduled for release in 2029, just in time for the franchise’s 50th anniversary. The livestream began with a new video called “A Boy With Gundam,” directed by Tsukuro Hayakawa, which features three generations of Gundam fans and sets the stage for upcoming celebrations.

There’s exciting news for fans of Gundam Wing! A new visual project has been announced to celebrate the show’s 30th anniversary. While details are still unknown – it could be a short, a movie, or a new anime series – more information will be released soon. Last year, Gundam Wing marked its 30th anniversary with events like a limited theatrical re-release of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. It’s worth remembering that Gundam Wing was also the first Gundam series to be broadcast on American TV, debuting in 2000.

Fans can look forward to ‘Gundam-Con’ at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, from January 9-11, 2027. The event will include competitions, special merchandise, and booths, with more details coming this summer. After its debut in Japan, ‘Gundam-Con’ will travel to other cities around the world, though locations haven’t been announced yet. April 7th has also been officially recognized as Gundam Day by the Japan Anniversary Association, and in 2029, the Tokyo National Museum will hold an exhibition honoring Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino.
