Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen came out in 2004, several years after the initial Pokémon games. While the very first Pokémon were released in Japan around eight years earlier and in the US six years before, it’s interesting to think that these versions were some people’s first experience with the franchise. Just like the original Red and Blue sparked a love for Pokémon in many players, FireRed and LeafGreen did the same for a new generation. I even knew someone who encouraged their younger sibling to start with FireRed, having enjoyed the original Red as a child.
Pokémon has always had a special quality that attracts kids. While the popular anime certainly helps, the appeal goes beyond that. For many, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen were the closest they could get to experiencing the original Pokémon craze, and those early, iconic moments still feel powerful today. Though they might seem basic compared to modern games, they had a huge impact on young players when they first came out, delivering the same excitement as more complex stories.
10. Getting Your Starter
It All Starts Here

Honestly, I can’t picture starting a Pokémon adventure without a Pokémon! It’s like everyone only talks about them, and you’re basically stuck in town until you get one to keep you safe in the tall grass. Getting your first Pokémon isn’t just about power-ups, it’s like getting a key to the whole world, and maybe even finding a buddy for the journey – at least for as long as the game lasts!
Picking your first Pokémon from Professor Oak is a huge deal – it really sets how your whole adventure starts. Do you overthink it and try to pick the ‘best’ one based on types, or just go with the Pokémon you actually like? By the time FireRed and LeafGreen came out, Pokémon was already super popular, so either way worked pretty well. There wasn’t really a wrong answer, you just had to choose and stick with it. And then, the best part? Absolutely crushing Blue when he challenges you with a Pokémon that counters your starter. Talk about learning to build a good team!
9. Battling Team Rocket at Silph Co.
Full-On Criminal Activity
Saffron City is where you’ll find Sabrina’s Gym, and it’s the sixth important city you visit on your journey through the Indigo League. You’ve battled Team Rocket a few times by now, but mostly just against their lower-ranking members. When you reach Saffron City, though, you’ll discover Team Rocket has taken over! They’re controlling the city, won’t let anyone into the Gym, and have even taken over the entire Silph Co. building, holding it hostage.
Team Rocket has launched its biggest and most obvious attack on the Kanto region yet. This goes way beyond their usual antics – it’s a serious threat, and you’re right in the middle of it. While it seems like a job for the police, you’re the only capable Trainer around, so it’s up to you to fight your way to the top of Silph Co. and stop them. This isn’t a simple challenge like exploring a cave or a Gym; it’s a high-stakes situation, and you’ll need to act like a hero in an action movie.
8. Receiving the Master Ball
With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility
Once you’ve defeated Team Rocket and saved Silph Co. and Saffron City, the company’s president wants to thank you. Team Rocket targeted Silph Co., a Poké Ball manufacturer, to steal their newest invention: the Master Ball. This special Poké Ball is guaranteed to catch any Pokémon. As a generous, though perhaps careless, gesture, the president gives you the only Master Ball prototype in existence as a reward.
Having a Master Ball is like possessing incredible, almost overwhelming power. It completely changes how you normally battle and catch Pokémon, letting you instantly capture any creature without needing to weaken it first. Since you usually only get one Master Ball – unless someone can duplicate items – you really need to think carefully about when to use it. Don’t waste it on something simple, and definitely double-check before you click, or you might accidentally use it on a common Pokémon like Pidgey – believe me, you’ll regret it!
7. Fully Evolving Your Starter
The Peak of What They Can Do
The three starting Pokémon all evolve at the same levels: they reach their second stage at level 16 and fully evolve at level 36. While evolving any Pokémon is exciting, fully evolving your starter Pokémon feels special. They were your first companions, and seeing them reach their final form is a great way to remember how far you’ve come on your adventure.
Evolving your starter Pokémon into Charizard, Venusaur, or Blastoise at level 36 feels like a major accomplishment. It’s especially rewarding to have one of the Pokémon featured on the game’s cover! These Pokémon have grown to their full size and strength through all your battles and adventures together. While they can still get even stronger up to level 100, reaching this evolution feels like you’ve finally unlocked their true potential and understand how they’ll help you overcome future challenges.
6. Fighting Giovanni at the Viridian Gym
He’s Not Happy with You
By the time you finish traveling around the Kanto region and return to Viridian City for the final Gym battle – the one you couldn’t access at the start – you’ll have faced off against Team Rocket’s leader, Giovanni, twice. Both times, he seems to underestimate you. It’s understandable – you’re just a young trainer with a team of Pokémon, and he’s an experienced criminal. He likely believes he has all the advantages.
After losing to you twice and seeing Team Rocket’s plans fall apart, Giovanni finally understands how powerful you are. He hasn’t given up on crime, though – he’s just temporarily hiding out at the Gym, rebuilding Team Rocket’s strength. Still, he won’t let you win the badge easily, and he’ll challenge you with his strongest Ground-type Pokémon team – the toughest battle of the Indigo League before facing the Elite Four.
5. Making it Through Victory Road
It Feels Like It’ll Go on Forever
You’ve collected all the badges, defeated Team Rocket, and built a strong Pokémon team – now you’re ready for the Elite Four, right? Not quite! First, you have to face Victory Road, a challenge dreaded by many players of the original Pokémon games. It’s a huge, complex cave system with lots of levels and winding paths. You’ll be constantly battling wild Pokémon and powerful trainers, and it feels like it never ends – it’s a truly relentless experience!
The real highlight isn’t actually playing through Victory Road, it’s finally reaching the end. You cautiously step out of what feels like just another cave, expecting more challenges, only to be greeted by the bright sunshine of the Indigo Plateau. Suddenly, everything changes – there are no more random battles, weak trainers, or puzzles to solve. All that stands between you and the Elite Four is a short walk and a quick visit to the Pokémon Center. It’s an incredible feeling of relief and anticipation, like stepping off a long flight after a frustrating journey.
4. Fighting Champion Blue
It All Comes Down to This
Throughout the game, your rival, Blue, is always there to bother you. He shows up unexpectedly, boasts after winning, and isn’t a good sport when you defeat him. By the time you reach the Pokémon League and challenge the Elite Four, he’s the last thing on your mind. You’re too focused on battling Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha, and Lance.
Once you beat Lance, you find out someone else has already conquered the Elite Four and claimed the title of Champion – the strongest Trainer in Kanto. And surprisingly, it’s Blue, who’s eager to prove he’s better than you. Annoying as he is, Blue is a formidable opponent with a team of powerful, well-trained Pokémon. He’s determined to stay Champion and finally beat you decisively. He’s the last challenge standing between you and becoming a Pokémon Master, and you’re ready to take him on!
3. Registering in the Hall of Fame
You’ve Made History Here
Now that you’ve defeated Blue and become the new Pokémon League Champion, Professor Oak is there to congratulate you on the special bond you’ve built with your Pokémon. He leads you through the League to a back room – not sure how he got access, but it works! Inside, you’ll find a large computer that holds the Hall of Fame. This is where every Champion and their Pokémon team are remembered, showcasing the incredible potential of Pokémon Trainers.

Beyond the fantastic music, this moment lets you see your entire Pokémon team together, celebrating your accomplishments. It also shows your Pokémon’s levels and how long you played, creating a lasting memory of everything you achieved on your journey – a clear reminder that you and your Pokémon truly became the best!
2. Encountering Mewtwo
The World’s Strongest Pokémon
Once you’ve become champion by defeating the Elite Four and caught a good number of Pokémon, Professor Oak will give you the National Pokédex. This special Pokédex lets you find and register Pokémon from all over the world, not just those originally found in Kanto. Strangely enough, you actually need the National Pokédex to unlock the final Pokémon in the Kanto region—Mewtwo, the Legendary Pokémon created by science!
Okay, so getting to Mewtwo in Cerulean Cave? Ugh, it’s a real pain. Seriously, you need a ton of Max Repels just to navigate through it all. And when you finally face him, he doesn’t hold back – he’s level 70, way stronger than anything the Elite Four threw at me! If you’re not prepared, he’ll wipe the floor with you. I mean, I could just use the Master Ball I’ve been saving, and it would kinda make sense thematically, but honestly? That feels like cheating. It would be way more satisfying to actually earn the catch and snag him with a regular Poké Ball, you know? Way cooler bragging rights.
1. Unlocking the Postgame
You’re Not Quite Finished Yet
In the first Pokémon Red and Blue games, once you defeated the Elite Four and caught Mewtwo, there wasn’t much left to do. The game essentially ended. But FireRed and LeafGreen added a lot more content after the main story. A friend of mine had a younger sibling who started playing, and neither of them knew there was extra gameplay to discover, which really surprised them!
FireRed and LeafGreen introduce the Sevii Islands, a new area where you can find Pokémon originally from the Hoenn region. Although you can access the islands before completing the main story, they truly become accessible after defeating the Elite Four. You’re taken there specifically to search for Lorelei, who has left unexpectedly. Just like when Ash travels to a new region in the Pokémon anime, it’s rewarding to discover that your Pokémon adventure isn’t over yet. Even after becoming a Pokémon League Champion, there’s always room to grow as a Trainer.
