Sonic 4: 5 Deep-Cut Villains Who Would Be Better Than Metal Sonic

Filming for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is finished, and it looks like Metal Sonic will be the main villain. While details are still limited, the movie will finally introduce both Amy Rose (voiced by Kristen Bell) and Metal Sonic. It’s still unknown who will voice Metal Sonic, and the filmmakers haven’t officially confirmed the villain, so there could be a surprise for fans.

I don’t dislike Metal Sonic, and he’s definitely a well-known character, but he isn’t the most compelling villain in the Sonic universe. The movies have focused on the most famous characters so far, but it would be great to explore some of the more interesting and complex characters from the Sonic lore. There are actually many Sonic villains who are more developed and engaging than Metal Sonic when you look at the entire franchise.

1. Mephiles the Dark

Sonic Needs A New Psychological Threat

  • Debut: Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)
  • Best Appearance: Sonic X Shadow Generations

Characters introduced in Sonic ’06 struggled to gain popularity because the game itself was so poorly received. While Silver isn’t the most memorable new character from that game—Mephiles the Dark is—he might have been better received if he hadn’t debuted in such a flawed title. In fact, many fans consider Mephiles to be one of the best villains in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, perhaps even better than classic antagonists like Eggman or Shadow.

While Mephiles is primarily a villain from the Shadow the Hedgehog game, the movies could easily change that. It looks like Shadow himself is going to be a recurring character, though.

Most villains in the Sonic series are designed to be similar to Sonic in terms of speed and strength, creating a fair fight. However, Mephiles is different – he’s a powerful god and a skilled trickster. The Sonic movies have generally featured villains who are physical threats, and it’s likely Metal Sonic will follow that pattern. Mephiles, on the other hand, would bring a new dynamic, focusing on psychological warfare and manipulation, as his main strength is controlling others. If the creators want a more straightforward villain, Mephiles could simply possess Shadow’s shadow, as seen in Sonic 4.

So, Black Doom was considered as a villain for Sonic 3, but the director, Jeff Fowler, said they decided against it because they felt having that much going on would’ve been overwhelming. Honestly, Black Doom always felt more like Shadow’s personal nemesis anyway, even more so than Mephiles did.

2. Doctor Starline

The Sonic Movies Need A New Evil Mad Scientist

  • Debut: Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW Comics)
  • No video game appearances

Dr. Robotnik is often seen with Agent Stone in the movies, who serves as both a trusted advisor and someone Robotnik frequently takes his frustrations out on. Even though Robotnik doesn’t always treat him well, Stone clearly looks up to him and seems completely loyal.

Okay, so Dr. Robotnik feels familiar, and it’s because of a character from the Sonic comics. There’s this villain, Doctor Starline, who starts out as a huge Eggman fan. But eventually, he gets frustrated with how Eggman messes things up and decides to do his own thing. What’s funny is they’re total opposites – Eggman’s chaotic, but Starline is super organized and gets stuff done. Agent Stone in the movies definitely feels like Robotnik, but honestly, a more serious character like Starline would probably work even better alongside Jim Carrey’s over-the-top performance.

Honestly, another mad scientist feels a bit much when Robotnik already takes up so much of the screen time. But after how Sonic 3 ended, bringing Robotnik back as a real threat is tricky unless they basically undo all his character development. That’s where a new villain like Starline could be awesome! Imagine a scientist who’s specifically ticked off at reformed Robotnik – that’d be a cool motivation and give us a fresh bad guy.

3. Fang the Hunter

A Bounty Hunter Who Can Outsmart Rather Than Outpunch Sonic

  • Game Debut: Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble
  • Best Appearance: Sonic Superstars

Villains don’t always need incredible powers or the ability to cause massive destruction. Sometimes, all they need is determination and resourcefulness. Fang the Hunter, while nowhere near as powerful as Metal Sonic, compensates for his lack of speed and extraordinary abilities with his intelligence and use of gadgets. Driven by profit as a bounty hunter, he’s completely focused on achieving his goals, no matter what it takes.

Fang wouldn’t make a strong main villain, but he’d be a fantastic supporting antagonist – someone who challenges the heroes with cleverness rather than brute force. He’d also be a great match for Tails, giving that character a chance to stand out on his own. And the Sonic movies could definitely include characters like Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polar Bear, too.

4. Dark Oak & The Metarex

AKA, That Time Sonic Was In A Mecha Anime

  • Debut: Sonic X
  • No video game appearances

Sonic X is an exciting anime series. The first two seasons closely follow the storylines of the original Sonic the Hedgehog games. However, the third season takes a surprising turn, becoming very similar to Star Wars, and it’s fantastic! This season introduces the Metarex, powerful bio-robots determined to take over the universe, led by the impressive Dark Oak.

I realize it’s unlikely that Sonic 4 will take inspiration from Sonic X, especially its most complex plotline, but let me indulge in a little wishful thinking for a moment.

In video games, Metal Sonic is typically portrayed as a simple, destructive robot. If the upcoming Sonic 4 stays true to its origins, Metal Sonic will likely be all action and little else. Dark Oak, however, could add a lot more to the story. Unlike Metal Sonic, Dark Oak and the Metarex have a tragic past. Originally, they were a people fighting to protect their planet. They resorted to cybernetic enhancements to survive, but this process cost them their compassion and ultimately, their humanity. This backstory could give the sequel a greater emotional impact and feel more epic than the previous game.

To keep the villain Dr. Robotnik from simply becoming evil again in future Sonic movies, the films need a bigger, more compelling threat that would force him to team up with Sonic. The Metarex would be an ideal choice for this.

5. Scourge the Hedgehog

Forget Metal Sonic, Scourge Is The Ultimate “Evil Sonic”

  • Debut: Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW Comics)
  • No video game appearances

Metal Sonic in Sonic CD was a great villain – a flawless, amoral copy of Sonic himself. He had all of Sonic’s powers but none of his conscience, which worked perfectly for a fast-paced 2D game. However, the character hasn’t changed much since then, and many fans now find him to be one of the less compelling characters in the Sonic series.

So, how about Scourge instead?

Scourge started as a parody of Sonic – an evil counterpart from another dimension – but he evolved beyond that. Initially seen as a simple joke, he became increasingly frustrated with being considered a lesser copy. By the end of his comic book appearances, Scourge became a formidable and well-designed character, capable of going toe-to-toe with anyone in the series. Though it’s not immediately apparent, he’s one of the more complex villains in the Sonic universe, motivated by feelings of insecurity instead of a desire for power.

Honestly, Sourge’s entire arc could be given to Metal Sonic.
