ASUS recently unveiled its latest ROG Strix Scar 18 gaming laptops, boasting they are the most powerful notebooks the company has ever created.
One of the biggest advantages of these new notebooks is their impressive power – a total of 320 watts. This is split between the Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor (145 watts) and the NVIDIA RTX 5090 graphics card (175 watts). This is more power than any gaming notebook we’ve seen before, delivering a significant performance boost over the previous 2025 model.
As a ROG fan, I’m really impressed with the new Strix Scar 18! They’ve bumped up the power supply to a massive 450W – a nice upgrade from last year’s 380W. It means the laptop can handle a lot more, and it looks like most of that extra power – about 18% more overall – is going to help the CPU perform even better.
ASUS states the processor can handle up to 200 watts of power during demanding tasks, though they haven’t specified exactly when this occurs. This higher power usage likely happens during specific CPU-intensive activities and not when the graphics card is being used. It’s logical to prioritize sending more power to the CPU when the graphics card isn’t needed.
The ROG Strix Scar 18 offers powerful performance with options for up to 128GB of RAM and a spacious 8TB solid-state drive. It includes two cutting-edge Thunderbolt 5 ports supporting DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery 3.1, plus three fast USB 3.2 ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, and improved networking capabilities.

The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 18 now includes a Mini-LED display. This 18-inch screen boasts a stunning 4K resolution (3840 x 2400) and a super-smooth 240Hz refresh rate. Colors are incredibly accurate, covering 100% of the DCI-P3 color space. Mini-LED technology offers improved brightness and eliminates the risk of screen burn-in, unlike OLED displays.
It’s hard to say exactly how much this new model will cost, but based on last year’s similar ROG Strix Scar 18 – which cost around R130,000 – we expect the price to be around R150,000. We don’t have a firm release date yet, but we anticipate getting a chance to test it out soon.
