The anime adaptation of Witch Hat Atelier continues to impress, consistently meeting and even exceeding fans’ high expectations. Bringing the unique and imaginative style of the original manga to life was a challenge, but the creators clearly put a lot of care into the project, and the result is fantastic. Episode 7 focused on character development and determination, ending on a cliffhanger where Coco risks losing her memories and passion for magic due to the Knights Moralis. Witch Hat Atelier consistently delivers exciting and unpredictable episodes, and the latest one started with a particularly strong opening.
The latest episode of the popular fantasy series, aptly titled “The Misgivings of the Knights Moralis,” focuses on the group responsible for enforcing the rules of a magical agreement. They’re willing to go to extreme lengths – even erasing a young girl’s memories – to maintain order. Easthies, the Deputy Captain, is quick to try and suppress Coco’s passion for magic, effectively ostracizing her without letting her or her teacher, Agott, explain what went wrong in the previous episode. Surprisingly, Richeh intervenes and rescues them, and other apprentices, along with Qifrey, also protest against the Knights’ actions. As expected, Agott’s past reputation plays a significant role in the situation.
The Deeper Mystery to Be Unearthed in Witch Hat Atelier Is Becoming More Clear
But There Are Still Pressing Questions That Need Answering
The rescue mission from Episode 7 took an unexpected turn when Coco accidentally dried up an entire river while trying to save Custas. Her spell, though not intended to be powerful, drastically altered the landscape, which immediately worried the Knights Moralis. Easthies, a strict knight, explained that such large-scale magic is forbidden, as it originates from a time before a crucial peace agreement and is considered extremely dangerous. He was also annoyed to see Qifrey arrive, commenting that all of his apprentices cause trouble. Qifrey simply responded with his usual cheerful attitude. Instead of simply erasing memories as he usually does, Easthies was forced to hear Coco’s explanation. He eventually let her go after confirming she didn’t have any tattoos associated with the Brimmed Caps – a secretive group known for using magical seals to enhance their powers or change their bodies.
With their work no longer interrupted, the group started back to the atelier, but Qifrey was shocked by something they found. He returned Coco’s cap and ink bottle, and she happily pointed out that the bottle was still full, even though she’d been using it during the recent trouble. Qifrey quickly realized something was off and sent Olruggio and the others home. He needed to travel to Kalhn with Coco, telling her it was a fun trip to buy her a new pen, but his real priority was to consult with Nolnoa – something was clearly very wrong.
As Tartah, a young assistant from The Starry Sword, cares for Coco’s injured leg, Qifrey makes a frightening discovery: the Brimmed Caps have messed with Coco’s ink. One of them added their blood to it, causing Coco’s magic to become dangerously strong. This should be reported to the Knights Moralis, but Qifrey, as usual, decides to keep it a secret from everyone, even Coco. Nolnoa has covered for Qifrey before, and he does so again in this episode, but this time, his behavior suggests he was compelled to stay silent, rather than simply asked.
Magic is a lie that fills the world with color.
I was fascinated by all the strange and wonderful pigments in the shop, and I watched Coco pepper Tartah with questions, asking him to identify and explain each one. It was a bit of a disaster when the jars tumbled and the pigments got mixed up, because suddenly Tartah couldn’t tell them apart, even though they were clearly different colors! That’s when I learned he has Silverwash Syndrome – it gives everything he sees a silvery tint and messes with his color perception. It really highlighted a key message of Witch Hat Atelier; later, Qifrey explained to Coco that truly seeing color and appreciating the vibrancy of the world is a vital part of being a witch. Shirahama’s work, I realized, is a celebration of the beauty all around us, and the endless potential of a fresh start.
Learning From Your Mistakes Isn’t Always a Painless Process
Both Coco and Qifrey Are Struggling With Fear of the Unknown
This week’s episode of Witch Hat Atelier was full of suspense and dramatic moments, hinting at a major confrontation between the Brimmed Caps and the secrets Qifrey is hiding. But the most impactful scene was when Qifrey lifted Coco onto his shoulder, vowing to protect her as long as she stays with him. Despite his mysterious behavior and occasional strange looks, most viewers agree that Qifrey genuinely cares about Coco’s safety, even if his other actions are puzzling. Now that Coco is without her mother and facing a daunting new world, she’s not alone – she has a dedicated mentor who will do whatever it takes to uncover the truth.
Qifrey seems like a brilliant and incredibly skilled witch to the young girl, and he truly is, with years of experience. However, even experts can still learn, and as the story unfolds, Coco’s eagerness to learn and her determination have helped Qifrey reconnect with his own passion and creativity. It’s easy to lose sight of what inspires us when life gets stressful, but we all have a playful side. Episode 8 highlighted that not knowing everything isn’t a bad thing—it just means there are more exciting discoveries ahead.
Everyone has their secrets. Qifrey’s just seem a little heavier than most.
Witch Hat Atelier can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
