Pokemon GO Holds Huge Record for Series Unlikely to Be Broken

Collecting all 1,025 Pokémon is a big challenge for players, and Pokémon GO is currently the best game for those hoping to catch as many as possible. When it launched in 2016, Pokémon GO initially featured Pokémon from the very first generation – the ones that appeared in Pokémon Red and Green. Over the past decade, Niantic, the game’s developers, have steadily added Pokémon from all subsequent generations.

Since 2020, Pokémon HOME has allowed players to transfer Pokémon they’ve caught in Pokémon GO. This has been especially helpful for those who didn’t play earlier games or can’t afford to buy every new game on the Nintendo Switch, offering a way to complete their Pokédex. It also lets players bring their favorite Pokémon from the mobile game to newer titles like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Which Pokemon Game Has the Most Available Pokemon?

A few years back, Pokemon GO became the Pokemon game with the most catchable creatures, surpassing Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Currently, Pokemon GO features 950 Pokemon, significantly more than the 807 found in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Niantic only needs to add 75 more Pokemon to include them all in the game. However, it’s important to be aware that this isn’t quite as simple as it seems.

Although Pokemon GO boasts the largest number of Pokemon to collect across all games, which Pokemon you can actually catch changes frequently. New Pokemon often appear only during limited-time events, and some require hatching eggs, completing Raids, or doing Special Research. The game also restricts certain Pokemon to specific environments, and even different parts of the world. In contrast, when a Pokemon appears in a core series game like Pokemon Legends: Z-A, players typically have more flexibility and can catch it whenever they want.

Good news for Pokemon GO players: this summer looks like a great time to catch lots of different Pokemon! Pokemon GO Fest 2026 is planning to feature the biggest variety of Pokemon ever available in the game. This will help players complete their Pokedex, which currently has 950 Pokemon to collect. While only 75 Pokemon remain to be added by Niantic, that number will grow in 2027. We already know about three new Pokemon coming from Pokemon Winds and Waves, and more are expected when the games launch on the Nintendo Switch 2. Plus, Niantic will also be adding new Mega Evolutions, inspired by those introduced in last year’s Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

Honestly, I don’t think any new Pokémon game is going to beat Pokémon GO in terms of how many different Pokémon you can actually catch. Game Freak made a big change with Sword and Shield by not including all the Pokémon from the original Pokédex, and a lot of fans were really upset about that. Unless they decide to bring everything back in Pokémon Winds and Waves, it looks like Pokémon GO is going to stay on top as the game with the most catchable Pokémon for a long time.
