Neverness to Everness calculates damage in a way that’s similar to many other gacha games. While experienced players of this genre will likely recognize the system, it might be confusing for newcomers. The game features various damage types and modifiers that impact how powerful your characters are. This guide will break down these elements to help you better understand the game.
All Damage Types in NTE
The battle system in Neverness to Everness is inspired by games like Genshin Impact, using a system of reactions. However, instead of traditional elements, this game features more mysterious damage types that fit the strange world and unique creatures (called Espers). These damage types are known as Esper Types.
It’s pretty straightforward: each character primarily deals damage based on their unique Esper Type. While there are a few exceptions we’ll cover later, most attacks will inflict damage of that specific type. Here’s a breakdown of each damage type and the characters who use it:
| Esper Type | Character |
|---|---|
| Cosmos | Esper Zero Hotori Chiz |
| Anima | Mint Nanally Jiuyuan |
| Incantation | Addler Baicang Sakiri |
| Chaos | Daffodil Lacrimosa |
| Psyche | Aurelia Fadia Hanniel |
| Lakshana | Hathor Skia |
Just to be clear, the amount of damage a character does in NTE is directly tied to their Esper Type. When building characters like Jiuyuan, focus on Arcs, Consoles, and Modules that boost Anima Damage and their overall Attack and Damage stats. Currently, Fadia is the only character who can benefit from damage types other than her Esper Type; her Ultimate allows her to deal Mental Damage instead of Psyche Damage.
ATK and Bonus DMG
Your character’s Attack (ATK) stat is the main factor in how much damage they deal. Higher ATK means more overall damage, with a few exceptions. Damage is also boosted by other things, like general damage boosts and special bonuses based on your Esper type.
As a gamer, I’ve learned it’s best to stack both attack and damage modifiers. Those damage stats on Console Modules? They actually boost your units’ overall damage with a universal multiplier. I’m still figuring out exactly how it all works with NTE’s damage calculations, but honestly, more damage is always good, especially if it’s treated as a separate bonus. It just feels right to maximize everything!
All Esper Cycle/Elemental Reactions in NTE
When a character uses a Support skill, a special reaction happens between that character and another unit, but only if their Esper Types are next to each other on the Esper Wheel. These reactions create various effects, depending on the combination of Esper Types involved.
| Reaction | Effect |
|---|---|
| Blossom (Anima + Cosmos) | Create a Vita Bud that fires bolts at nearby enemies. |
| Remora (Cosmos + Lakshana) | Slows down a target’s attack and movement speed. |
| Nova (Chaos + Psyche) | Apply Nova to targets. Nova detonates when its duration expires, dealing Mental DMG. |
| Scorch (Chaos + Incantation) | Targets take damage over time while Scorch is active. |
| Hexed (Incantation + Anima) | Targets take an additional instance of Follow-Up Damage when they take Anima or Incantation damage. |
| Stained (Psyche + Lakshana) | Enemies take increased damage from Psyche and Lakshana damage. |
| Charge (Cosmos + Lakshana + Anima) | When Blossom’s bolts hit targets, your active character gets bonus Ultimate energy. |
| Discord (Psyche + Chaos + Incantation) | Trigger Nova and Scorch together to apply Discord, significantly decreasing a target’s Break bar. |
Okay, so how much damage those Esper Cycle reactions do really depends on your characters’ Cycle Intensity – basically, how strong their connection to the Esper is. The game looks at whoever has the highest Cycle Intensity when a reaction happens, and that’s what it uses for the damage calculation. It’s a total game-changer! I’m realizing I can seriously boost my team’s damage by focusing on building off-field characters with tons of Cycle Intensity, and then just stacking my main damage dealers with raw damage stats. It’s a really cool system!
It looks like Cycle Intensity isn’t the only factor determining damage with Cycle Reactions. I tested Blossom missile damage against the Serenetti boss with different character stats to investigate further.
- Esper Zero: 1087 ATK, 7 Cycle Intensity
- Hotori: 1224 ATK, 10 Cycle Intensity
- Jiuyuan: 1019 ATK, 83 Cycle Intensity
The in-game tutorial suggests Blossom’s damage is based on Jiuyuan’s Cycle Intensity. However, I’ve found the damage from Blossom’s bolts actually seems to vary depending on which character activates it. For example, bolts triggered by Esper Zero dealt 875 damage, while those triggered by Hotori dealt 880. Surprisingly, switching to Nanally (with a Cycle Intensity of 28) didn’t change the damage numbers. This is unexpected, and we should investigate further, as it suggests Blossom’s Vita Bud damage might not always follow the tutorial’s explanation.
We’ll revise this guide when we fully understand how damage is calculated in NTE.

What is Attachment Damage in NTE?
Attachments are negative effects applied by certain characters, and Attachment Damage boosts how much damage these effects deal. For instance, Jiuyuan’s Lethal Rose Pact continuously damages enemies, much like a Poison or Burn. Skia’s Fang Thrust also deals extra damage over time. In the game, increasing Attachment Damage will make these types of effects more powerful.
It can be tricky to spot attachments initially, because they look different depending on who used them. For example, Jiuyuan’s Lethal Rose Pact shows up as a tiny rose on the enemy, and Skia’s Fang Thrust creates two yellow rings near their feet.
What is Break Damage in NTE?
Break Damage is the extra damage dealt when a target’s Break meter is filled. This damage is mainly determined by the Break Intensity stat. The game’s explanation of Break Intensity can be tricky, but here’s the key: the Break Damage you deal is based on the total Break Intensity of your entire team – all four characters. It doesn’t matter which character actually breaks the target; it’s the combined Break Intensity that counts. Also, Break Damage increases with the target’s maximum HP, making it especially useful against bosses.
While you could focus on Break Intensity for all your characters, you’ll generally deal more damage by building for critical hit rate, attack power, and bonus damage instead. If you’re really interested in a team focused on breaking enemy defenses, Daffodil is a great choice. Her abilities are designed to increase Break Damage and make enemies easier to break.
