How to Get Horse Mounts in Palia

Palia currently features three rideable horses: the Dawnspur, Akwindu Thoroughbred, and Phoenixfire Dawnspur. You can get the first one easily through a short quest, but the other two need to be purchased with real money. Once you’ve unlocked all three breeds, you can buy more of the same types from the Ranching Store using in-game gold. Here’s how to get each horse breed:

Unlock Dawnspur Breed (Before the Dawn Quest Walkthrough)

In this game, you’ll receive Dawnspur as a free horse, but you’ll first need to complete the ‘Before the Dawn’ quest to unlock it. The good news is you can start this quest in Royal Highlands without having to progress through the main storyline, letting you get your first mount quickly!

To complete the Before the Dawn quest in Palia, just follow these steps:

  • First, just enter Royal Highlands.
  • Talk to Hassian, who can be found on the west side of Lonely Glen. For easy finding, just keep going west from the entrance gate (Lochland Dock), and you’ll see him standing near a horse stuck in an amber prison (glowing golden ores).
  • Use any tool to break the amber prison nodes around the horse. Press R to access your Primary Tools inventory and equip any bow, then smash the nodes several times until they split.
  • Collect any three local flowers in Royal Highlands and interact with Hassian again. This will trigger a cutscene where you appear to feed the horse, finishing the Before the Dawn quest and granting you the Dawnspur horse mount in Palia.

We freed Dawnspur from its amber prison using a Makeshift Bow, and it took nine arrows to break it completely. The number of arrows needed might change depending on the bow and arrows you have. We also gave Dawnspur Dawnspur Lilies and Royal Heather, which are plentiful and easy to find in Lonely Glen.

Unlock Akwindu Thoroughbred Breed

The Akwindu Thoroughbred is a rare Arabian horse, and the only way to get one is by buying either of two special packs available in the store.

  • Highlands Supporter Pack ($29.99)
  • Royal Highlands Supporter Pack ($59.99)

Although it costs slightly more, we think the second pack gives you better overall value.

This package lets you breed Akwindu Thoroughbred horses using the Ranching system. It also includes a unique horse with a special Electric visual effect, plus other bonus items. This version can produce even more beautiful horses. You can still develop traits on the regular Akwindu, but it will require more time and work.

Unlock Phoenixfire Dawnspur Breed

Phoenixfire Dawnspur is considered one of the coolest mounts you can get in Palia. You can obtain it by purchasing one of the special bundles available in the in-game store.

  • Phoenixfire Riding License (2,550 Palia Coins)
  • Phoenixfire Dawnspur Starter Bundle (2,975 Palia Coins)

Palia Coins are the premium currency in the game, and you can purchase them from the in-game store. The first bundle includes a unique mount and an Insta-Grow cookie to help your mount mature quickly, letting you ride it sooner. The second bundle allows you to acquire more mounts from the Ranching Store, and also provides a Phoenixfire Dawnspur with a randomly determined Alabaster Flame appearance.

You can only ranch horse mounts whose breeds you have already acquired.

How to Ride Horse Mounts in Palia

Horses in the game have two key attributes: speed and stamina. Speed determines how quickly a horse runs and has six different levels. Horses also have limited stamina – they’ll eventually get tired and stop. You can replenish a horse’s stamina while riding by collecting glowing golden orbs.

Now here’s how to ride mounts in Palia:

  • Press R and select the mount slot from the Primary Tools wheel to summon your horse. When it appears, you will automatically ride it.
  • Press W (or Arrow Up) to move forward. Press it more times to make the horse go faster.
  • Press S (or Arrow Down) to slow down or stop.
  • Press Space to jump. If it doesn’t work, you can set the jump key in settings (Control Settings > Keybinding > General Gameplay > Jump/Glide).
  • Press X to get off the horse.

You can customize how you control your mount in the game. Go to Control Settings and then Keybinding to change the keys you use. You can also adjust how the camera moves while riding and tweak mount background effects in the Settings menu.

How to Change Horse Mounts in Palia

After you receive your first Dawnspur horse through the questline, it will appear automatically in your primary tool slots. If you prefer to use a horse you’ve bought or bred yourself, you can easily swap them out. Here’s how to change your horse mount in Palia:

  • Go into Collections from the Inventory menu (or press Y).
  • Hop into the saddle icon (sixth in the row).
  • Equip your desired mount.

Just a reminder: you can only use fully grown mounts. Smaller, baby mounts won’t appear as options until they’re either given Insta-Grow cookies or reach adulthood naturally.
