Takeshi Yamanaka, producer of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, recently shared details about the game’s Episode Mode, including how long it will take to play through. The Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls community is buzzing with excitement after the announcement of two new characters, and many are hoping to see Carnage join Dr. Doom’s team of villains.
As the August release of Marvel Tokon gets closer, the game’s marketing is really gaining momentum. Earlier this month, Arc System Works announced the “Fighting Avengers” team for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls – the third of five launch teams. While Hulk, Captain America, and Iron Man are classic choices, Arc surprised fans by including Shuri’s version of Black Panther. This isn’t entirely unexpected, though, as Arc System Works has already shown a willingness to include less conventional characters like Danger and Peni Parker in the game.
Marvel Tokon’s Episode Mode May Be Divisive
With two characters still to be announced, players are curious about the game modes available when the game releases. Arc System Works previously discussed a single-player ‘Episode Mode’ for Marvel Tokon during the X-Men reveal, but didn’t share many details then. They did confirm it would be a unique story created through a collaboration between Arc System Works and Marvel Comics, blending American comic book style with Japanese manga. However, recent information suggests this mode might not be as gameplay-focused as some players expected.

I was really excited to hear more about Episode Mode from Takeshi Yamanaka! He explained they’re trying to do something different with how they tell a story in the game, kind of like a traditional campaign, but in a new way. Apparently, it’s going to be told through these awesome motion comics – they took manga panels and actually animated them! With five teams to follow, there’s about 10 hours of story content, which is huge. He said the focus is really on experiencing the story like you’re reading a comic book. At first, it sounded like it would be purely a visual experience, but they’ve now said there will be playable battles sprinkled in there too, which is fantastic!
It’s not unexpected that the game features a long story mode, as Arc System Works has included similar content in the past. Guilty Gear Strive, for example, also has a story mode that plays like an extended movie with no actual fighting. While Strive offers plenty of other ways to play, this mode is a welcome addition for fans who enjoy exploring the Guilty Gear world in more detail.

Arc System Works hasn’t shared many details about the game modes that will be available when Marvel Tokon launches. Some information appeared briefly on Steam back in February, but it was quickly taken down. This early leak did accurately reveal some features, such as the game starting with 20 playable characters. It also suggested features like 64-player lobbies, enhanced PC settings, traditional versus modes, local multiplayer, and a story-driven ‘Episode Mode’.
