New 10/10 RPGs That Are Rewriting The Rules Of The Genre

RPGs are constantly changing and improving more than any other type of video game. The genre is so open-ended that it allows for a lot of creativity and fresh concepts, and recently, it’s become obvious that this trend of innovation isn’t stopping anytime soon.

2026 is shaping up to be an amazing year for gaming, and RPGs are leading the charge. The quality and innovation in this genre are truly exceptional. No matter what kind of RPG you enjoy – from strategic, turn-based games to fast-paced action – you’re likely to find something completely new and exciting.

We’re mainly highlighting fantastic RPGs that came out earlier this year, but we’re also including two promising games scheduled for release in 2026.

2026 RPG Masterpieces

Esoteric Ebb

Flaws Are The Way

Details:

  • Dialogue options heavily factor in failures and mistakes
  • Investigation becomes the primary way forward

Esoteric Ebb offers a unique role-playing experience by focusing on characters with weaknesses and imperfections, rather than simply powerful heroes. The game’s conversations and story paths are heavily influenced by personality, social skills, and even failures. Instead of punishing mistakes, the game uses them to create interesting outcomes and keep the narrative moving forward.

The game’s detective-style approach moves away from non-stop fighting, introducing a deeper, more psychological experience that helps it differentiate itself from many action-focused games. I was impressed by how carefully designed the incorrect and unsuccessful paths are, and I rarely felt the need to replay sections during my first playthrough. It wasn’t until I played through it a second time that I started to see opportunities for further exploration.

Escape from Ever After

Childhood Wonder On Another Level

Details:

  • Narrative satire that is very self-aware
  • Familiar archetypes combined with a more comedic flair

Escape from Ever After playfully tackles serious issues like exploitation, corporate power, and societal breakdown using familiar fairy tale settings. While fantasy games often offer an escape from reality, this one flips the script, showing fantasy worlds shaped by money and control, making them surprisingly relatable and allowing players to experience both the magic and the harsh realities within them.

Honestly, playing this game just made me grin from ear to ear. One minute I was carefully jumping across an icy lake, and the next I was strategizing in a turn-based boss fight. It’s awesome because no matter how long you play, the game keeps throwing new gameplay stuff at you. It definitely feels like they were trying new things, but unlike a lot of games that do that, it actually works. Even when it tackles some heavier themes, it never loses its funny, satirical edge – it’s just really well done.

Mewgenics

A Really Feline Adventure

Details:

  • Roguelike loop with turn-based RPG gameplay
  • Deep build options and item combos

Describing Mewgenics in a single word? Absolutely wild. You breed cats and send them on adventures, but like many games by Edmund McMillen, things quickly become unpredictable. The first few hours are full of surprises, as the game constantly introduces new and unexpected mechanics just when you think you understand how it works.

Throughout the game, you’ll unlock different character classes based on familiar D&D roles, like warriors and spellcasters. As you collect more cats, the game’s breeding mechanics become increasingly complex. Mewgenics is a roguelite RPG with a truly original spin, and if you’re searching for your next favorite game, I’m confident this is it.

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection

Building Lifelong Bonds

Details:

  • Large-scale creature collecting
  • Streamlined gameplay that opens the doors for more players

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection builds on the Monster Hunter world with a story-focused experience that’s easier to pick up and play than previous games. A key part of the gameplay is forming strong bonds with monsters, which directly improves how you fight, explore, and plan your strategies throughout the game.

What really stood out to me was how the game’s areas are designed. They’re expansive and allow for exploration, but aren’t completely open-world, which helps keep the story focused. This approach feels like a fresh take on monster-collecting RPGs, making the gameplay feel quicker and more engaging, and letting you easily get lost in the narrative.

Crimson Desert

What Doesn’t This Game Have?

Details:

  • Everything from base building to dragon flying
  • Huge gameplay variety across a giant world

Even before its release, players predicted that Crimson Desert would be a groundbreaking RPG and redefine open-world games. Now that it’s available, it’s clear they were right – the game includes almost every mechanic, concept, and gameplay style imaginable.

What really stands out is the game’s massive scale – once you gain the ability to move freely and fly, the sense of freedom is incredible, especially compared to other games in the genre. I was surprised by the sheer amount of content and activities available; I easily lost hours battling enemies, farming, and even just interacting with the animals. In the current landscape of open-world games, Crimson Desert is definitely a frontrunner.

Promising Upcoming RPGs

Phantom Blade Zero

More Than Another Soulslike

Details:

  • Unique techniques tied to each weapon
  • Heavy martial arts influence

While Phantom Blade Zero appears to be a standard action RPG inspired by Eastern games, it offers a unique experience with its combat, story, and world. You play as Soul, a character with only 66 days to live, and must battle countless enemies to discover the reason behind this deadly fate.

The game’s distinctive look comes from its focus on realistic Kungfu and Wuxia fighting styles. Players can master a wide range of weapons, each with unique attacks and combinations. This allows for a truly flexible fighting experience, letting you become a powerful warrior and battle until the very end.

Beast of Reincarnation

Far From Game Freak’s Comfort Zone

Details:

  • Blend of turn-based and real-time combat
  • Both human and dog attack inputs

Game Freak, the studio famous for the popular Pokémon series, is trying something new with their latest game, Beast of Reincarnation. The game features a beautiful world that blends technology and nature, and everything within it—from the landscapes to the creatures—is full of interesting contrasts. This creates a unique look that emphasizes the game’s apocalyptic setting.

As a gamer, I’m really excited about this! It looks like we’ll be switching between fast-paced, real-time fights and more strategic, turn-based battles, which is awesome. Plus, you’ve got a dog companion, Koo, who’ll jump in and help when things get hectic. I’m always searching for ARPGs that do something different, and blending genres like this is exactly what I love to see. It seems like this game could really shake things up!
