New Co-Op Game KingFish is a City Builder for One Player, an Action Roguelike for the Other

Firevolt recently announced KingFish, a unique co-op game coming to Steam. In KingFish, one player controls a giant, island-sized Fish and focuses on building a city, while the other player acts as the King, defending it with combat and tower defense strategies. It’s a roguelike, meaning each playthrough will be different!

Firevolt is a game development studio founded by experienced developers who have worked on popular games like Crysis, Far Cry, Warface, and World of Tanks. Until recently, they’ve mostly provided support to other studios, offering services like art creation, design, demo development, and porting games to platforms like PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Steam Deck. KingFish appears to be one of the first games Firevolt is creating themselves. Their Steam page currently lists only one other project: a demo for a cooperative racing game called WheelMates.

KingFish is an Asymmetric Co-Op Roguelike City Builder

I’m really excited about this new game, KingFish! It was announced on May 12th, and it sounds totally unique. It’s a co-op roguelike where you and a friend play completely different roles. One of you is the Fish, and you play from a bird’s-eye view, building up a base, training troops, and setting up defenses. You can even help your teammate in battle by giving them a wider view of things and using special abilities, like a move that stuns enemies. The other player is the King, and you get a closer, more action-focused view. As the King, you’re running around collecting resources and fighting enemies directly with your sword. It sounds like a really cool combination of strategy and action!

A core part of the gameplay in KingFish is managing villagers. As the Fish, you’ll recruit villagers, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. For example, Lancelot is a powerful knight who deals extra damage, but he gets discouraged when assigned to production tasks. Henry, however, is a skilled artisan who significantly increases output in production buildings. As the King, you can equip these villagers with items found on the battlefield and strategically deploy them in combat or assign them to jobs where they’ll be most effective.

Currently, details about KingFish are limited, but it’s designed as a roguelike game. This means each playthrough will offer unique maps, gameplay elements, and obstacles. The main objective in KingFish is to survive and explore as many strange islands as possible.

Firevolt hasn’t announced when KingFish will be released. It’s unknown whether the game will first appear as an early access title on Steam, or if it will launch as a complete game. If you’re interested, you can add KingFish to your Steam wishlist to stay informed about its progress.
