In the world of Pokémon, Pokémon gain power in many ways. While transformations like Mega Evolution and Gigantamax are well-known, the use of aura is a more hidden ability. Only a few Pokémon can harness this energy, but it’s one of the most intriguing and captivating concepts in the series. According to the story, aura is a life force connected to all living creatures, much like the idea of a life energy as seen in real life.
Aura became popular because of Lucario, the Pokémon most associated with it. Lucario even created the move Aura Sphere, a strong attack that always hits its target. While Lucario is famous for it, other Pokémon can also use Aura Sphere in battle. Interestingly, some humans can sense and use aura too, and they’ve been known as Aura Guardians for centuries.
8. An Ancient Aura Guardian Sealed Away a Troublesome Spiritomb
The Ghost/Dark-type Later Breaks Free of Its Seal
In the world of the anime, there used to be many people who could control aura, known as Aura Guardians, but they’ve mostly vanished over time. Ash and his friends discover the story of one ancient Aura Guardian who journeyed with his Pikachu. Long ago, this Guardian sealed away a powerful and dangerous Pokémon called Spiritomb – a Ghost/Dark-type – inside the Hallowed Tower after it caused trouble for a village. However, during the events of “The Keystone Pops!”, a mishap occurs: Aipom accidentally deflects an attack, breaking the seal and releasing Spiritomb.
Ash and Pikachu are in a hurry to stop Spiritomb before it causes further trouble. Luckily, as a storm approaches, Pikachu uses a strong Thunderbolt to successfully seal Spiritomb away. It’s notable that despite being a frightening Pokémon, Spiritomb has appeared multiple times in the series after its first appearance. For example, Cynthia owns a Spiritomb, and it’s much calmer than the one a past Aura Guardian had to manage.
7. Dawn’s Togekiss Is Able To Use Aura Sphere
A Kind and Powerful Pokémon Received as a Gift
At the beginning of the original Pokémon animated series, Ash finds a strange Pokémon Egg after visiting Grampa Canyon. When the egg hatches, a cute Togepi emerges and quickly becomes the center of attention – not only for Ash and his friends, but also for Team Rocket! Ultimately, Togepi decides Misty will be its Trainer, because she was the first person it saw. Later, Togepi evolves into Togetic and leaves its friends to become the protector of Togepi Paradise in the Hoenn region.
After traveling together for a while, Ash’s friend Dawn meets Princess Salvia, who is her identical twin. They decide to switch places for a day, allowing the princess to compete in a Pokémon Contest with her powerful Togekiss, which can use Aura Sphere. The princess wins the contest and, grateful to Dawn, lets her take care of Togekiss. She believes Togekiss would be happier traveling with a Pokémon Coordinator like Dawn than staying confined to the palace.

In the Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia game, players undertake a mission to save a unique Riolu from Team Dim Sun. This Riolu is special because it already knows the move Aura Sphere, which Riolu normally learns only after evolving into Lucario. A similar storyline appeared in an episode of the original Pokémon anime, though the details of the animated Riolu’s story were different.
In the anime, Riolu originates from the Lucario Kingdom and is born with the Aura Sphere ability because it’s being trained as the next Aura Guardian. It was captured twice – first by a criminal organization, and then by a man connected to the Pokémon Hunter J. When Riolu met Ash and his friends in the forest, it initially attacked, but Pokémon Ranger Kellyn stopped it. As the heroes searched for Riolu’s caretaker, they gradually earned its trust. Despite repeated attempts by J and her team to capture Riolu, they were never successful.

I’m a huge fan of Ash Ketchum, and everyone knows his amazing quest to become a Pokémon Master – it’s his lifelong dream to catch ’em all and win every competition! But did you know he’s one of the very few people who can actually use aura? It’s a really special ability, and he’s one of the last ones around, along with his friend Riley, who can do it these days. He’s decided to focus on being a Pokémon Trainer instead of fully embracing the role of an Aura Guardian, but he’s definitely shown off his aura powers a bunch of times throughout his journey!
Ash teamed up with Sir Aaron’s Lucario to heal the Tree of Beginning, a feat that almost cost him his life. Afterwards, he demonstrated the ability to sense the auras of Pokémon around him, including Greninja and his own Lucario. Remarkably, Ash can also connect with the auras of people, even those who have died. As seen in the episode “Distant Blue Sky!,” Ash was able to communicate with the recently deceased Sunny and even control his aura, allowing Sunny’s spirit to touch Pikachu.

4. Riley’s Background Is Expanded Upon in the Anime
In the Anime, Riley Is an Aura Guardian-In-Training
When players visit Iron Island in the Generation IV games to train their Pokémon, they’ll encounter Riley, a unique trainer. Riley specializes in Lucario, a strong Pokémon that fights alongside the player in double battles. It’s a good idea to have an open slot in your party when you meet Riley, because he’ll give you a Pokémon Egg after your time together. This egg will hatch into Riolu, which can eventually evolve into Lucario with training and attention.
While Riley doesn’t have a big role in the games, the anime shows he’s training to become an Aura Guardian. Similar to Ash, Riley is one of the few people in the present day who can use aura. He shares a selfless nature with his Pokémon partner, Lucario, and always strives to do what’s right, especially when facing danger. Riley is a remarkably skilled aura user, capable of sensing the auras of others and even creating protective shields with this energy.
3. Mewtwo Is One of the Most Formidable Legendary Pokémon
Mewtwo Can Utilize Several Moves, Including Aura Sphere
Mew is a charming and enigmatic Pokémon with an unknown past. Remarkably, its DNA contains the genetic code for almost every possible Pokémon move. Scientists at Team Rocket once discovered a small amount of Mew’s DNA within an old artifact and used it to create a clone named Mewtwo. Unfortunately, no one at Team Rocket, including their leader Giovanni, showed Mewtwo any kindness. As a result, Mewtwo escaped and rebuilt the ruins of its birthplace into a magnificent palace.
Mewtwo lures a group of Trainers to its fortress with a dangerous plan: to wipe out humanity and all Pokémon. It also captures their Pokémon to create powerful duplicates. These clones immediately begin battling the original Pokémon, while Mewtwo fights against Mew, trying to convince it to stop. Their fight is short but full of incredible attacks, including a raw, early form of Aura Sphere used by Mewtwo.

Long ago in the town of Rota, Sir Aaron was a respected protector of Queen Rin, known as the Aura Guardian. Before Poké Balls or Pokémon Trainers were even thought of, he journeyed with a Lucario, teaching it about auras. Sir Aaron didn’t just train Lucario to use auras, but to sense them, even with its eyes closed. He also emphasized the importance of rest, believing proper training required relaxation.
Lucario was devastated when Sir Aaron, the man he admired, appeared to betray him and Rota, trapping him inside a jewel. After waking up centuries later, Lucario questioned everything he knew about Sir Aaron. Was he a true hero, as everyone believed, or had Lucario been right to suspect treachery? A journey to the Tree of Beginning finally revealed the truth about Sir Aaron – a revelation that would both shatter and mend Lucario’s heart.

When talking about aura in the world of Pokémon, Lucario is central to the discussion. First appearing in the Sinnoh region, Lucario quickly became a fan favorite due to its unique look and powerful abilities. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Professor Laventon studied this Fighting/Steel-type Pokémon extensively and even named the energy it uses “aura.” Some lucky trainers in the anime series have a Lucario on their team, and the most fortunate can even unlock its Mega Evolution.
I remember seeing the oldest Lucario appear in the movie Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. It was a really unique situation – this Lucario had been asleep for ages, trapped inside its old trainer’s scepter, and suddenly woke up in the present day! At first, it didn’t trust Ash, but they quickly became good friends and fought alongside each other. This Lucario was incredibly skilled, especially with Aura Sphere – it was its go-to move in battle, though it also knew Detect. Despite being a pretty serious Pokémon, you could tell it was really brave and just trying to figure out its place in a world that had changed so much since it last knew it.
