David Schwartz, CTO of Ripple, playfully responded to a New York Times article claiming to reveal Bitcoin’s creator. He posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the article would “finally” settle the long-running debate about who invented Bitcoin.
It’s hard to tell if Schwartz was being sincere, sarcastic, or somewhere in between, as he didn’t offer any further explanation. Since then, the crypto community has been endlessly discussing his tone, and that might have been his intention all along.
What the Investigation Actually Claims
For a year and a half, journalist John Carreyrou, who has won a Pulitzer Prize, researched the true identity of Bitcoin’s creator, known as Satoshi Nakamoto. His investigation led him to believe that Adam Back, a British cryptographer who leads the company Blockstream, is the most probable person behind the cryptocurrency.
The report analyzed more than 134,000 messages from early cypherpunk online discussions. Researchers looked at how people wrote, the technical concepts they shared, when these ideas emerged, and how they communicated with each other to understand the contributions of hundreds of individuals.
The Community Reaction
The crypto community had varying reactions. Some in the XRP community noted that ‘Back’ has long been suspected of something, but there’s never been solid evidence. Others directly accused David Schwartz himself, simply replying “It’s David,” which sparked a lot of discussion.
David pointed out that Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, might have different ideas today, given how the cryptocurrency world has evolved over the last 15 years. He questioned whether Satoshi would still hold the same original vision for Bitcoin.
When I shared my findings, hoping to finally settle the discussion, the post quickly gained a lot of attention – over 214,000 views, actually. The responses were all over the map, from people genuinely wanting to understand more to others completely rejecting my conclusions.
Back Says No
As an analyst, I’ve followed the recent claims linking Adam Back to Satoshi Nakamoto, and he’s firmly denied any involvement. He argues the similarities identified are simply due to shared roots – we both come from the same cypherpunk community and were inspired by the same ideas. He also makes a valid point that, given the volume of his published work, some stylistic overlaps are bound to appear in any close examination, purely by chance.
