Sony Doesn’t Want Nintendo To Be Lonely, So The Price Of PS+ Is Increasing

Nintendo faced criticism for increasing the price of the upcoming Switch 2, and now Sony is also raising prices, specifically for PlayStation Plus Essential subscriptions, without a clear explanation.

The price of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will rise in September, continuing a trend of increasing costs for all current gaming consoles. This price hike, and others over the past year, is largely due to tariffs put in place previously, as well as a shortage of computer chips and hardware. This shortage is partly caused by companies purchasing large quantities of these components for building artificial intelligence data centers.

Given the current economic situation, it makes sense that Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo might increase console prices, even though fans are disappointed. However, the recent announcement on PlayStation’s official Twitter (now X) account about a price increase for PlayStation Plus Essential in some areas is harder to accept.

The Price Of PlayStation Plus Essential Is Going Up Just Because

Sony is raising the price of PlayStation Plus Essential. A one-month subscription will now cost $10.99 USD, €9.99 EUR, or £7.99 GBP. A three-month subscription will be $27.99 USD, €27.99 EUR, or £21.99 GBP. Sony cites “ongoing market conditions” as the reason for the price increase, but hasn’t provided details.

Fans are confused about why Sony is raising the price of its digital-only service due to hardware problems. Since the service doesn’t require Sony to manufacture new hardware – the necessary systems are already set up – it doesn’t make sense that hardware issues would impact pricing.

Sony has announced that PlayStation Plus Essential subscriptions will now cost $10.99 per month, or $27.99 for three months. Prices in Euros are €9.99 monthly and €27.99 for three months, while the UK price will be £7.99 monthly and £21.99 for three months.

The price increase won’t impact current subscribers, and they can continue enjoying the services as usual. This feels less like a standard price adjustment and more like a pressure tactic to maintain revenue for Sony’s digital offerings.

Sony is facing criticism for charging extra for small features and services at a time when many players are struggling financially. This is especially frustrating because many games require a PlayStation Plus Essential subscription just to play with friends online. Fans may decide the costs are too high, particularly after the recent price hike for the PlayStation 5, and potentially stop supporting Sony’s services.
