Sony Makes Official Statement Regarding PlayStation DRM Fears

Sony has clarified that PlayStation users don’t need to repeatedly verify their game licenses after buying them, despite recent reports. While Sony confirms a change to how its digital store confirms game purchases, they state it only involves one extra verification step.

Content creator Lance McDonald recently shared a screenshot revealing a new feature on PlayStation consoles. This feature displays a “Valid Period” and “Remaining Time” for each digital game, currently set to 30 days. McDonald believes this indicates a problematic form of DRM (digital rights management) that requires consoles to verify game ownership every 30 days. He suggests that if a console isn’t connected to the internet for that period, players could lose access to games they’ve purchased. This change appears to be affecting both PS4 and PS5 consoles. His post on X (formerly Twitter) quickly gained over 6.7 million views and sparked considerable criticism of PlayStation.

Sony Clarifies New PlayStation DRM, Says It’s Not as Bad as Initially Reported

Sony has officially responded to concerns about digital rights management (DRM) on PlayStation. They confirmed a new system was added to verify game licenses, but it’s less restrictive than many believed. According to Sony, players can continue playing games they’ve already purchased. The new system simply checks, one time, to confirm you own the game. After that initial check, the game remains playable, even offline, without needing to connect to the internet again.

New PlayStation DRM Reportedly Closes a Piracy Loophole

Sony hasn’t explained why it made this change, but some players believe it’s to stop a loophole. This loophole reportedly let people get refunds for PlayStation games even after starting them, as long as their console wasn’t connected to the internet. It only worked on modified PS5 consoles when buying games from the online store. Users could supposedly disconnect the console, copy the game’s license key using unofficial software, request a refund, and then use the copied key to play a pirated version of the game.

Sony believes the recent security check won’t impact most players. Their official statement is intended to clarify things after the first reports about changes to PlayStation’s digital rights management.

The bigger question now is whether Sony will provide more details about how the timer system works. What we do know for sure is that this new system won’t affect games bought before the March 2026 firmware update – it only applies to purchases made after the update is installed.
