Subnautica 2 Won’t Let You Kill Fish, But These 5 Games Give You a Rocket Launcher

The initial release of Subnautica 2 has been mostly successful, and the developers at Unknown Worlds have shared plans for upcoming improvements. However, they’ve decided against allowing players to harm the game’s creatures, a choice that some players disagree with.

It’s easy to understand why the developers are focusing on exploration rather than combat in Subnautica 2. However, players’ frustration is also valid – it’s incredibly frustrating to have your base repeatedly destroyed by large fish. Since you can eat these fish, not being able to defend yourself feels unrealistic and takes you out of the experience. Fortunately, the developers at Unknown Worlds are looking into giving players more ways to deter these creatures, which could be a good compromise.

Currently, it looks like you won’t be able to harm creatures like Leviathans in Subnautica 2. But, not all survival games focus on protecting the environment – sometimes it’s just more fun to grab a rocket launcher and hunt dinosaurs!

Let me be clear: I’m not criticizing Subnautica 2. Unknown Worlds can absolutely make the game they envision, and it’s perfectly fine that Subnautica 2 isn’t focused on violence.

Ark: Survival Evolved (Or Ascended)

Dinos Aren’t Going To Ascend Themselves

Okay, so you can’t actually wipe out any dinosaurs in Ark: Survival Evolved or Ascended, but trust me, you can definitely mess up their numbers for a while. When you first start playing, it’s brutal – you’re completely helpless, stuck with nothing against all those huge predators. But that’s the fun of survival games, right? Eventually, you get powerful. Like, really powerful. You go from being dino-chow to being able to one-shot a Rex with enough firepower, and then…tame it! Turn it into your own personal, robotic dinosaur army. Honestly, it’s kind of what dinosaurs were meant to become.

Unlike the first game, Subnautica 2 cleverly restricts creature attacks to only when you’re constructing buildings. In Ark, however, you have to constantly defend your entire base from dinosaurs unless you find a naturally safe location, and simply avoiding conflict isn’t a viable strategy. You’re not just visiting this world – you’re a resident trying to survive, flourish, and potentially become dominant. While you can choose to live peacefully alongside the creatures, that’s your choice, not theirs.

Deep Rock Galactic

Stripping A Planet For Parts

Deep Rock Galactic is a game where you play as space-dwarves sent to mine resources on a dangerous alien planet. Players complete missions to extract materials from Hoxxes IV, and often have to fight off swarms of native creatures – it’s all part of the job!

The planet isn’t exactly a paradise, but it can support life – just not for humans. In Deep Rock Galactic, all four character classes begin with good weapons and gear, which become even more powerful as they gain experience and earn money. Even the Gunner dwarf’s Hurricane, a rocket launcher, isn’t considered one of the game’s most powerful weapons.

Palworld

Turning Wildlife Into Weapons

The initial appeal of Palworld – “Pokemon with guns” – is more than just a catchy slogan, and the game largely lives up to the hype. While you can’t equip every creature with a weapon, some Pals possess gun-based abilities, and one can even launch aerial missiles. Surprisingly, Palworld balances adorable creatures with darker elements without ruining the cuteness. The game encourages players to use these creatures as tools – as weapons or tireless workers – and you can even process them for resources or simply to clear inventory.

To make things even more challenging, some Pals can operate a weapons factory, producing powerful new guns and ammunition to defeat more creatures. You’ll eventually be able to craft a Rocket Launcher, either by reaching level 49 or by having your Pals build it for you.

Far Cry 4

Kill Them Before They Kill You

Though the Far Cry series always takes place on Earth, the games are known for their beautiful and remote settings – including a memorable location in Montana. The main character is usually an outsider who disrupts the existing order. I chose Far Cry 4 because its setting, Kyrat, is incredibly stunning, but honestly, most of the Far Cry games fit this description.

In addition to eliminating around a billion enemy soldiers, players in Far Cry games also face dangerous wildlife that will attack on sight. Whether it’s a Bengal tiger or even a honey badger, these animals can quickly ruin your plans if you try to approach them peacefully. Instead of making players feel helpless, Far Cry 4 allows you to fight back against these predators, and a wolf doesn’t stand much of a chance when facing a rocket launcher.

The creatures in both Subnautica 2 and Far Cry 4 can be frustrating, but Far Cry 4 is unique in that it actually allows you to fight back.

Subnautica

Planet 4546B’s Fish Weren’t So Lucky

It is possible to defeat Leviathans in both Subnautica games, but it’s challenging and requires both effort and good fortune. While the game isn’t really built for players to kill these creatures – your tools aren’t designed for that, and Leviathans are very durable – players have found ways to do it anyway. This is probably why the developers made some creatures invincible in Subnautica 2. However, this change has frustrated some players, as the original games struck a good balance between possibility and difficulty.
