8 Most Exciting Changes in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced

I spent a lot of my time with the Xbox 360 repeatedly playing Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. I really loved playing as Edward Kenway and sailing with his crew on the Jackdaw, even before I explored the stories of the other Assassin’s Creed characters. You could say I was completely immersed in a pirate adventure during my early teenage years.

When Ubisoft announced the remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, I had mixed feelings. Knowing their recent track record, I was both hopeful and worried they’d change too much of what made the original great. But after seeing the reveal and early previews, I was surprisingly impressed – I immediately pre-ordered the game, which is something I didn’t expect to do for a Ubisoft title!

So, what exactly has been improved and added? I won’t reveal everything, but here’s a look at some of the most exciting new features and changes coming to Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, based on what we know so far.

8. You Can Now Toggle Edward’s Hood

To Match the Vibe, of Course

We’re beginning with a small change that might seem insignificant to some, but those who enjoy deeper immersion in games will appreciate it.

AC Black Flag Resynced lets you control whether Edward Kenway’s assassin hood is visible while you’re playing. This means you can choose to hide it while exploring or enjoying the game’s scenery, letting you see his face whenever you want.

So, I’m not sure if this will be in the game when it first comes out, but don’t worry! One of the developers actually said it’s planned in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session. It’s definitely something they’re working on, even if it’s not ready for day one.

7. Pets on the Jackdaw

But Not the Parrot Stereotype

Similar to how the hood/cowl can be turned on or off, the recently updated Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced now includes a pet system on the Jackdaw ship. While it might seem like a minor addition, it really enhances the game’s atmosphere, particularly for fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Before, the animals in the game were mostly just sources of materials to improve Edward’s tools. Now, you can have a unique animal friend that lives with you on the ship while you explore the ocean.

You can play as either a monkey or a cat, and customize their appearance with different breeds or fur patterns. If you purchase the Deluxe Edition, you’ll also get a special black and gold striped cat as part of the Master Assassin Naval Pack.

6. Modernized Visuals and Water Tech

By Ubisoft’s Standards, It Looks Insanely Good

Even though I used to strongly dislike the direction Ubisoft was taking, I have to admit they’ve done an amazing job updating the graphics in Black Flag. They completely rebuilt the visuals, improving details on characters’ faces, adding realistic lighting effects, and boosting the overall quality using their own Anvil Engine. It’s truly impressive – Edward Kenway now looks almost as good as he did in the original game’s cinematic E3 trailer from 2013.

One of the game’s biggest improvements is the stunning Caribbean Sea. The water now looks dramatically more realistic thanks to new technology. While the original game had a nice visual style for the ocean, it showed repeating patterns and ships seemed to float on a flat surface instead of interacting with actual waves. The updated water effects solve these issues and create a much more immersive experience.

Resynced is taking ocean visuals to the next level. Waves now look and feel much more realistic, with noticeable depth and texture, particularly on beaches. What really sets it apart is the new weather system, which impacts how the ocean appears, making it feel more powerful and dynamic than before.

5. New and Improved Action Combat

No More Simple Counter Play Galore

I’m not trying to criticize the older games or anyone who remembers them fondly, but honestly, the combat was pretty basic. In the original Assassin’s Creed 4, most fights involved just waiting for a cue to counter, pressing a single button, and then quickly eliminating enemies one after another until they were all defeated around Kenway.

Resynced appears to be focusing primarily on overhauling the combat system, based on early looks at the game. They’ve moved away from the original and created a faster-paced, more challenging experience. Expect features like parrying, quick weapon switching, destructible environments, smarter enemies, and tougher opponents. The game also aims for smoother transitions between stealth, parkour, and direct combat.

Honestly, the biggest disappointment I’ve heard about is that you can’t actually fight with Edward’s dual hidden blades – they’re only for silent takedowns now. I really hope they consider adding combat functionality back in with a future update! But even without that, I’m still super excited for the remake and it’s not ruining the experience for me.

4. Reworked Tailing Missions

They’re Not As Restrictive Anymore

A common criticism of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was the frequent use of frustrating tailing missions. These sections, where players had to follow a target closely, felt out of place in a game that was otherwise about open-world exploration and the freedom of being a pirate.

Guards could see you from impossibly far away, enemies moved very slowly and predictably, and the game often forced you to stay close to a specific area.

The updated tailing missions in Black Flag Resynced appear to fix previous complaints while still letting players use stealth.

If you’re detected now, it won’t cause an instant failure. You’ll have time to react, either by adjusting your approach or finding a different way to reach your goal if they’ve noticed you.

You’ll be able to fully understand how the game handles both eliminating nearby enemies and pursuing them once it’s released. That’s currently all the information available about the updated chase sequences in this remake.

3. Accessibility Additions

Wouldn’t be a Remake Without ’em

While the 2013 version of Black Flag still holds up, the improvements to accessibility in Resynced are a major, often overlooked upgrade. Ubisoft clearly wants more people to be able to enjoy the game, and they’ve made that possible by letting players customize the on-screen display and tweak visual elements like parrying effects and the Jackdaw’s aiming arc.

The game’s core mechanics have been subtly improved in clever ways. Now, when playing as Edward, you can customize the difficulty of stealth, ship battles, and overall gameplay independently. Some quick-time events can be skipped, and the challenging underwater sections are more adjustable – you can even turn off oxygen limits and shark attacks, which is fantastic for players like me who are afraid of the ocean.

What’s really impressive is how thorough this update seems, especially coming from Ubisoft. The developers are calling it the biggest accessibility improvement they’ve ever made to an older game, and looking at the features, that actually seems accurate.

2. New Story Arcs

Intriguing Yet Slightly Concerning

I know many players are disappointed that Ubisoft appears to have removed the modern-day/Abstergo parts of Resynced, but that’s not the main point here. Instead, we’re getting a lot of new story content that will help us learn more about Edward Kenway, Blackbeard, and Stede Bonnet.

Honestly, Blackbeard was already a super memorable character in the first game, and I was bummed he didn’t get much screen time considering how important he was to Edward’s story. It looks like Ubisoft realized that too, and they’re giving him a lot more to do this time around, which is awesome! Plus, they’re expanding on Stede Bonnet’s role – and let’s be real, who doesn’t love that guy? I’m really excited to see more of both of them.

A key improvement in this version is a deeper look into Edward Kenway’s internal struggles, made possible by replacing some modern-day scenes with explorations of his thoughts. Additionally, Darby McDevitt, a lead writer from the original game, has created a brand new scene featuring Edward’s wife, Caroline Scott Kenway. Overall, everything shown so far suggests Ubisoft is prioritizing a consistent emotional experience over simply setting up future games in the series.

1. Naval Combat Improvements

The Jackdaw’s Full Might Unleashed

A major improvement in Black Flag Resynced is a wider variety of weapons for the Jackdaw ship. Ubisoft has announced that the ship now features more secondary weapons and different ways to fire them, making naval combat much more dynamic and less repetitive than in the original game, which often relied on the same broadside attacks.

I’m really blown away by how much they’ve improved the enemy AI! It’s not just about tougher ships anymore. Different groups are actually forming alliances and feuds with each other, which totally changes how naval battles play out. Plus, each faction has its own special weapons and tactics, making every encounter feel unique. It’s a surprisingly deep and ambitious change, and I’m loving it!

You can now hire three special officers by completing side quests, and each one improves how the Jackdaw performs. While we don’t have all the details yet, it looks like these officers will significantly change your ship’s capabilities in battle – they’re more than just visual additions to your crew.
